I heard Todd Franz was in the danger zone for being cut (good god Mark Roman should be too...and I read that Nick Collins is the preliminary favorite to start at strong safety...

im not cutting franz, i'm saying the packers might

CB's--Al Harris, Ahmad Caroll, Joey Thomas, Micheal Hawkins,

Safeties--Earl Little, Arturo Freeman, Nick Collins, Marviel Underwood, Todd Franz

and no mark roman...jason horton most likely practice squad

say what you will about micheal hawkins, but if the packers reached for him like they dis, they're not gonna cut him right away

I think you're dead on man. I believe they see alot in Hawkins. He might be a practice squad caliber guy but would probably get picked up on waivers if the Pack tried to get him there. They have enough CB/S types on the roster to take a chance and keep him on the final roster.

It is way too early for me to pick the final 53 members of the team and the 5 practice squad members. There are so many things that can happen from now to the first regular season game like injuries etc. You just never know who is going step up and make the roster from this years rookies, and the new free agent crop. I'll be at the Packers mini camp(If they are held outside) and Packer's summer training camp and see how the team is Progressing. I will post this Packer Forum concerning what I observe.

I did make a mistake. Last year they increased the maximum number of practice squad members to eight. The point in putting this up is to help you cut through the clutter of the next phase of offseason and training camp.

I encourage each of you to set up your list.
One method is to have 1st and 2nd string at each of the 22 on field positions. Then add your three kick team guys(P, PK, LS) and your at 47 and get to add only 6 more.

or 53 less 3 kick team guys is fifty and you allocate 25 to offense and 25 to defense and then narrow it to a general positon and not so much who is right and left.

It helps you think of the level of competition Ted Thompson has set up.
It you are not the #4 DE, DT, OT, OG, CB, S you are on the bubble.
Looking "good" in mini camps is not good enough. The competition amongst the DB's and DL will be the most interesting.

Look at #5 WR with Walker holding out, the #5 S and #5 CB. Coston, Leach, Luchey and some of these rookie free agents. Are they good or good enough?

I welcome the comments on Hawkins as I set up my list prior to mini-camp and continue to revise it.

I find it helps me sort out news stories. Grain from the chaff so to speak.

I'd wait until going into training camp to set up a list like this, I think they're going to sign a defensive veteran of some sort, hopefully DE, after june 1st cuts are made--unless they think corey williams/cullen jenkins made that huge of improvements, or mike montgomery will be a solid contributor, the only part of the defense im still very wary about is the fact that we're going to see a lot of aaron kampman next year, that doesn't bid well for KGB...

...the way it sounds, hawkins impressed some people at the mini camp...

I agree that this isn't the final roster, but I have taken and set up the roster as I would like to see it. As mine is set, Kurt Campbell is the only Draftee that doesn't make the Roster or the Practice Squad. I know that my roster is probably not going to be what the final one will be because of Salary Cap and such and some of the players I want cut, will make it, but here is what I would like:

RB
Ahman Green
Najeh Davenport
Tony Fisher

FB
William Henderson
Vonta Leach

QB
Brett Favre
Aaron Rodgers
J.T. O'Sullivan

OT
Chad Clifton
Mark Tauscher
Brennan Curtin
Kevin Barry

OG
Adrian Klemm
Matt O'Dwyer
Grey Ruegamer
Junius Coston

C
Mike Flanagan
Scott Wells

TE
Bubba Franks
Ben Steele
Garrett Cross

WR
Javon Walker
Donald Driver
Robert Ferguson
Terrence Murphy
Antonio Chatman

DE
Cullen Jenkins
Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila
Aaron Kampman
Kenny Peterson

DT
Grady Jackson
Donnell Washington
Corey Williams
James Lee
Colin Cole

LB
Na'il Diggs
Nick Barnett
Ray Thompson
Brady Poppinga
Hannibal Navies
Zac Woodfin

S
Nick Collins
Earl Little
Arturo Freeman
Marviel Underwood
Todd Franz

CB
Al Harris
Joey Thomas
Mike Hawkins
Ahmad Carroll

K
Ryan Longwell

P
B.J. Sander

PS:
Chaz Williams
Walt Williams
Michael Montgomery
Sean McHugh
Vince Butler
Craig Bragg
Roy Manning
Will Whitticker

Oh yeah, Ruegamer or Steele would be the Long Snapper. There are some decent players that will be cut, but it is time to cut some players that haven't really stepped up to the plate in the last 2 years and make way for fresh blood, IMO. Good-bye Nall, R.Davis, Martin. Luchey, Roman, Hunt, C. Johnson, Atlas H, Morley, Bedell, Lenon.

Not a Word on Fisher.

I note no Martin, Luchey, Nall, Lenon, and Rob Davis, Grabthar.
I like what you've done. I might only disagree on Lenon but not vociferuosly.

I think it is time to move on. Too many people have been getting free rides as backups and if they have stopped developing, why not let them go and let some young hungry players take their place that will have more upside.

if you're talking about Tony Fisher I think you're right. He's too vanilla for what I want. He can catch balls, but nowhere near as fast and elusive as that type of back should be...a satisfactory ball carrier, has started at RB in a pinch before, you know he can do mop up and injury duty but with Ahman's contract up we might have to be looking a new direction

It will be intersting to watch who wins the 2nd and 3rd qb job. I think McBrien is out, leaving the competition to Rodgers, Nall, and O'Sullivan. Looks like Nall or O'Sullivan will be the odd man out. We could put the 4th guy on the practice squad. I'm guessing it will be O'Sullivan unless Nall is released. I don't know the exact number but I would figure he would have the highest 3rd string qb salary in the league. I like Nall, but with Rodgers as the heir apparent know, I don' think it makes sense to keep him at what we are paying him. Maybe a trade could be worked out. I'd bet some team would give up a 4th rounder.

You cannot put anyone on the practice squad with their level of experience. Both Nall and O'Sullivan have been in the league too long to go on the practice squad. They are ineligible. McBrien can be there.

Nall or O'Sullivan will either be cut or traded.

Now that the 2nd mini-camp is done my choices as to where we are at are:

Offense (26) 5 Practice squad

QB(3)

Favre
Nall
Rogers

RB(3)

Green
Davenport
Fisher
Williams(PS)

FB(2)

Henderson
Luchey Cap consideration helps him win spot.
Leach (PS)

WR(6) Tricky may go with 5 until Walker reports and cut a player for 6.

Driver
Ferguson
Chatman
Murphy
Thurman
Bragg(PS)
when Walker returns Bragg waived to practice squad. Watch last cut

TE (3)

Franks
Martin
TBA(Steele cut for last minute pick up or O'Sullivan trade)

Tackle (4)

Clifton
Tauscher
Bedell
Barry

Guard (3)

Klemm
Ruegamer
O'Dwyer
Coston(PS)
Whittaker(PS)

Center (2)

Flanagan
Wells

Bragg and Thurman will be the camp battle on offense. At this point IMO we will likely sign a TE and cut Steele.

Defense(24) 1 CB, Montgomery, and Campbell on PS(3)

CB (4) If healthy Horton battles Hawkins

Harris
Thomas
Carroll
Hawkins if loses to Horton on PS
Horton PUP list?, PS, or loses to Hawkins or cut when Walker reports

Safety(5) Franz unlikely but if 10 DB kept and special teams gets him in.

Freeman
Roman
Collins
Underwood
Little

LB (6) Lenon on Bubble makes it on ST and 6 LB's kept

Barnett
Diggs
Thompson
Navies
Popinga
Lenon(?)

DE (4) True Luck may get 10th DL depends on LB and DB #'s.

KGB
Kampmann
Jenkins
Williams

DT (5) Plan on Hunt cut.

Jackson
Washington
Lee
Peterson
Cole
Montgomery (PS)

Special Teams:

Longwell
BJ Sander
Rob Davis

My Practice squad is

Coston
Whittaker
Montgomery
Leach
Williams
Bragg
Horton
Campbell (LB)

24,25, or 26 on offense and defense. I have 26 offense 24 defense and 3 Special Teams to get 53.

Bubble guys:

On defense Lenon, Hawkins, Horton, Tru-Luck, Franz and Hunt will be sweating the final cut as the final numbers dictate. I would keep Lenon and cut Tru-Luck, Hunt. Hawkins and Horton battle for CB spot and loser gets the Practice squad.

On Offense the big camp battle will O'Dwyer and Ruegamer for starter but both will make squad. Also between Thurman and Bragg for roster spot. There are tough choices in 53 players and 8 practice squad guys.

August 30th we will be at 65 players plus NFLE exemptions.
September 4th is final date for the 53 man roster and the questions of why.

Oops - as stated in another thread - McBrien was who got the axe....
Only O'Sullivan, Nall & Rodgers remain...

Honestly, my opinion on Tony Fisher is this. He's a guy that isn't going to look flashy with anything he does BUT...he simply makes plays. Look at how many of his carries or receptions net first downs for the Packers! He may not get a lot of notoriety and he probably doesn't deserve any. I'm just glad he's on our side and he continues to play hard and not ***** about #'s of carries, $$$, or whatever.

Yea - I like Fisher, too! As soon as I heard he was Notre Dame alumni - I was sold.
His work ethic is very much like Henderson's!

Fisher has always been capable of getting the necessary yardage on third downs, so why would you eliminate that from the team chemistry? Who would replace him? I would think Davenport is more often hurt then any of the RB's and therefore more likely to be trade bait.

Well, I wasn't too far off. I missed on:

Offense:
J.T. O'Sullivan - They kept Nall
Brenden Curtin - They kept Chris White
Matt O'Dwyer - They kept William Whitticker
Ben Steele - They picked up Donald Lee
Garrett Cross - They kept David Martin

Defense:
James Lee - They kept Michael Montgomery
Ray Thompson - They Picked up Rob Thomas
Hannibal Navies - They kept Parris Lenon
Zac Woodfin - They kept Roy Manning
Arturo Freeman - They kept Mark Roman
Todd Franz - They kept Jason Horton

Also, I only had 52 players on my roster, so I guess Rob Davis is still there.

Overall, not a bad guess 4 months before the season started. This was my guess after just the first mini-camp after the Draft. Only 11 players off.
