Isaiah McDuffie News - Gute doing insurance Gute type things. Signed to a 2 year $8M deal (incentives could climb it to $9.5M) $4m/yr deal with likely I bet a 2M-3M hit this year...DEPENDING what his signing bonus is it could be a one year deal essentially.

The main conclusion from the McDuffie signing is that the LB position will likely be a low priority for much change heading into 2025. If Cooper and Walker are going to take the big majority of snaps, where does McDuffie fit in? Wilson is better on special teams and Hopper is a third round pick. Draft picks that high don't ordinarily sit on the bench too long. Would McDuffie take snaps away from Cooper and Walker and Wilson on special teams? I hope not. While Wilson is a free agent, resigning him makes sense from a special teams perspective.

The only scenario that makes sense is the front office sees McDuffie as a much better back up than Hopper should Walker or Cooper be out with an injury. That would provide a lot of justification to the folks who decried the Hopper selection last year calling him a wasted pick.

Role guys like this never get over 20-30% give or take in GB - which likely means we are committing one real year to McDuffie with the out of keeping him if he balled out this year…but he isn’t gonna play a ton unless the room has injury.

Also everyone, you as well, knew either Eric Wilson or McDuffie was being resigned. We have only two guys on roster with significant actual game snaps, and Hopper. One of them was getting resigned and both still may.

McDuffie has been a solid purchase in RD5. He’s everything you expect from a mid Day3 LB. Not overly flashy, but he wears well. Core Teams guy with ability to rotate in at starting LB as a contingency without a a major dropoff. I think $4Mil is very fair for his services.
For myself, I see this as more of the filling in of smaller cracks so we can focus on key positions without financial distraction. Great teammate with a lunch pale work ethic. He’s a Reliable player from several angles.
Congrats to McDuffie he’s earned this!

Again, I think the McDuffie signing shows a huge lack of confidence in Hopper and a draft priority in 2025 that doesn't include a LB in the first 5 rounds. Guys like that are a dime a dozen in the NFL.

That’s one angle.
I just think he’s a guy that has nearly 100 tackles on a Defense that imo supersedes any D we’ve had in 15 years. He does what he’s asked (weakside strongside or Teams) and at a Starter level. His ties to Haf likely influenced this. Yet I think Jeff Hafley earned the right to choose his players and I think he was involved in that decision. I think you guys would agree Jeff Hafley knows what he’s doing.

I just like we don’t get yanked too many different directions as we reinforce our roster. All the way back to my playing Army guys as a kid, this has the scent of staying with what has worked and reinforcing a segment of the D. That move is essentially at worst our 3 Starting LB crew and a pretty good one at that. Not saying we can’t grab one or add depth, but it absolutely pushed LB need to minimal.

Now let’s go get at least 2 of 3 of a premier or + Starter at Edge, CB or WR.

This is why you give a guy that has proven NFL capable as a back up and honestly the last two seasons and a solid contributor on teams truly a rather cheap contract likely with a structure that is not anywhere close to high until next season and even than likely $5-$6M which only way you let him see that year is if he's yet again a starter and yet again continues to help this defense progress even more.

He's started for us 25 times over the last two seasons; only Clark, Slaton, Gary, Nixon and Walker of current Packers has seen more starts.

These guys that in a moment's notice can come in and the drop off is minimal in many aspects of the game are exactly the type of guys you try to flesh your roster out with - ESPECIALLY during time frames where the rest of the room is made up of rookie type contracts. The structure of this deal I would bet my life on doesn't put a ton of commitment past 2025, but keeps his 2026 number low incase say Quay leaves in FA and Hopper doesn't progress and a rookie drafted this year or next isn't ready.

This pick allows Gute to still draft a LB if one at the spot when on the clock makes sense and not bat an eye...again because McDuffie being in house has immense value this year, but may not be needed next season at all. This signing doesn't change that.

I mentioned it before here and have in the past in reflections of games - McDuffie is a known commodity, and as a coach there is immense value in having some players like that - especially in specific roles or off the bench. I played a lot of basketball growing up, BUT I wasn't the ball handler in the sense of breaking ankles, nor was I the best shooter...I wasn't the quickest defender either...however I often ran point because I was smart with the basketball, knew the offensive responsibilities for every position except the 2 (even that one I knew I just never ran plays in it usually) and was tasked with playing defense typically against their best guy. I never understood it really until my coach told me I know you know precisely your responsibility and you will execute it...even if you get beat on defense you know to immediately fall to where your helpside ought to be coming from...you know where and how to execute, if beat it isn't from being dumb it is purely your guy beat you. <-- That is McDuffie to a 'T' IMO. He is rarely beat because he made a bad decision or read things wrong or blew his assignment - no he gets beat purely because his assignment is more athletic or just quicker.

I predict his structure is something like $2.5M hit 2025 and $5.5M in 2026 with only like $2M guarantee and nearly nothing on the line in 2026....even the staunchest McDuffie critics cannot deny he's easily worth that.

I guess we just disagree on McDuffie's ability. I see him as easily replaceable and a big liability in the passing game. While I don't doubt he's very familiar with Hafley's defense, he was still targeted in the passing game. With a 53 man roster, decisions are always going to get very interconnected. If Hopper evoked any confidence as a good no 3 LB, I doubt Gute would've spent the extra funds to keep McDuffie around. I just hope this is all very meaningless because Cooper and Walker have monster seasons next year.

While I don't doubt he's very familiar with Hafley's defense, he was still targeted in the passing game. With a 53 man roster, decisions are always going to get very interconnected. If Hopper evoked any confidence as a good no 3 LB, I doubt Gute would've spent the extra funds to keep McDuffie around. Great stats. It shows that opposing QBs were no different than a wolf in the wild. They picked on the young and the weak in Cooper and McDuffie. Isaiah is a solid situational LB, an okay backup, and from what I understand a good guy in the locker room. I am fine with this signing as you need solid backups. Hafley needs to devise some schemes to help out McDuffie in coverage.

Hopefully Sean Duggan works hard with McDuffie to shore up his weak points.

Those are great stats. Thanks for posting. Looks like Q Walker had the best yardage per target at 7.17. Cooper was second at 7.41 yards per target with McDuffie at 8.85 yards per target. Just more evidence that Walker and Cooper need to be on the field in any passing down.

Oh absolutely - and I think it's always the preference for sure. If memory serves McDuffie on a third and short got beat on a slip screen type play that I wonder if a big chunk of his yards was that play. I'll try to find it and see if I'm right. If it is that one play likely skewed him some in the yards per target category, but the target %s was very intriguing to me - clearly offenses target the inexperienced for sure.

Can't say it enough, the offseason situation for the Packers was really excellent. Decent amount of cap space, no real big losses in Free Agency and guys like the 4 above, as well as others, that they were able to keep for another possible season, at a low price.

The Packers have only 1 ERFA that they haven't announced their decision on, Aaron Mosby. I expect Mosby to be tendered.

Agree and he also gets good marks for high availability and playing well off the bench. He's a very solid guy and excellent as a backup and specs roles.
