I hear the the Oakland Raiders are going to release former Packer WR James Jones. He was always a favorite here, I wonder if there is enough tread on the tires to warrant bringing him in for a look. The obvious negatives are he doesn't contribute to special teams and his age. The positives are he is familiar with what we do here, is a great locker room guy, and Rodgers knows and trusts him.

It's going to happen.....so might as well start the ball rolling. Would you like to see Jones back in Green Bay?

I would be absolutely fine with bringing him back for cheap and let him compete with Abbrederis, Janis and Montgomery for a roster spot.

I agree Captain, but the key is "cheap" My guess is that he won't come as cheap as it would take for the Packers to bring him back. A WR desperate team will scoop him up for more then he is worth to us.

But a lineup of Nelson, Cobb, Adams, Jones...WOW!

I agree that another team will probably offer him way more money than the Packers should. There´s another thing to consider with bringing Jones back as it would mean the team would have to get rid of at least one of Abbrederis or Janis. While bringing in four undrafted wide receivers possibly means the coaching staff isn´t excited about any of them I wouldn´t want Thompson to offer Jones any guaranteed money and therefore assuring him of a roster spot.

i wonder why they are releasing him? He's done fairly well considering what has been around him and they're young and rebuilding. I'd figure he'd be a guy you wanted around in those stages of the game. Did the Raiders get stacked at WR recently, I admittedly don't pay much attention to them

Jones put in the work to cure any hands problem he had in GB at least. Not sure what he's been doing with the Raiders, but I thought he was doing pretty well for them. I could easily be wrong about that. I'd have no issue bringing him back for the right price of course. I think he'll get more somewhere else though

I'm going to point out the obvious, especially after this news of Jones being cut. I think both Jennings and Jones benefited greatly by having Aaron as their QB while in GB. No doubt in my mind this was one of the key motivating factors that kept Cobb in GB.

The Raiders signed Michael Crabtree and drafted Amari Cooper but I´m still surprised they will release Jones.

both Jones and Jenkins are recipients of short sighted exposure. Then they find out how good they had it. If I was him I would've stuck it out for 2-3 more years in GB and then gracefully retired to the beautiful Los Altos Hills.
I'll give credit to James, he's not gonna come back to GB after being spoiled with CA weather and being closer to family.. He'd be welcome on a Raji type deal tho

Surprised here, too. He was making pretty much what he did in GB, this year and next ($3mil+) although the fact that there was dead money involved might have been a factor. With Packer fans always saying "how could anyone defend Nelson, Cobb, Adams, and (fill in the blank), I have to wonder why the Raiders didn't give Crabtree/Cooper/Jones a try.

Haven't been here long enough, but wanted to ask if the mods can combine the two Jones threads.

The Raiders have more than $20 million in cap space available, I don´t think cap savings played a major role in Jones´ release.

It's hard to say my typical line about the Raiders, because I've always had respect for Reggie McKenzie. However, it is the Raiders. Trying to analyze their transactions is like trying to understand the thought process of a lunatic.

I bet TT will withhold entertaining this till some practices occur....see what staff thinks....no doubt Jones could most likely step in and be our #4 if needed....but I and I bet the staff would prefer a youth that is progressing be that for us.

I'm surprised as well.

That said, I don't think there's any reason for us to consider him. We're already carrying more roster-capable WRs than we can keep.

Didn't count for myself, just plagarized from a news report, but I get:

DB - 47
LB - 37
WR - 34
OT - 26
DE - 23
RB - 23
TE - 18
OG - 16
DT - 16
QB - 7
C - 5
NT - 2
P - 1
LS - 1
K - 0

Good year to be an incubant special team specialist. Not so good anywhere on D or, as you said, WR on offense.

Even veteran WRs with some tread left on the tires may have a tough time finding work. Some pragmatic veterans may stay employed because they are wise enough to accept less. Proud veterans that overvalue their personal market value or that have baggage may have their faces pressed against the glass as they peer inside. It will be interesting to see how the two former Packers WRs, Jones and Jennings, fare in the days ahead.
