I hate to admit it, but generally speaking the Cowboys probably are the most popular NFL team. They've fallen off some since they haven't won a Super Bowl in awhile now, but they're still very popular. If they win a Super Bowl, Cowboy fans will be coming out of the woodwork. It's pretty well known the Cowboys are the most valuable franchise (money-wise) in all of sports - not just the NFL. But they're not just popular in Dallas, there are Cowboy fans nationwide. Then they got that America's Team nickname back in the '70s. In the national media, the Cowboys probably get more coverage than any other team. If you look at the players who get picked to become commentators, there are more than their fair share of Cowboy players there: Aikman, Romo, Sanders, Irvin, Jimmy Johnson. So there's a backlash against that. Whenever something gets popular or successful, there are people who are going to hate it. They still have the record for most consecutive seasons .500 or better. People got tired of them, sort of like how some people hate the Patriots today. Also, a lot of their teams have had a lot of swagger to them. Players like Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders. More backlash. And of course a lot of their fans were pretty arrogant, you can hear it in their catchphrase "How 'bout them Cowboys!". For me personally, I remember being a kid in the '70s. The Packers weren't good any more, and the Cowboys were in it every year. Annoying kids coming to school in their Cowboy jackets. So I hated them to begin with, but it got even worse: In the '90s they had some of the best teams ever, they won the Super Bowl three out of four years, and the Packers couldn't get past them. Favre lost every game in Dallas. When we finalliy broke through and got to the Super Bowl ourselves, we didn't have to face them, the Panthers had knocked them off.
