Robert Tonyan back on a 1 year deal

No financial details yet but I like it in principle. Gives him a chance to rebuild value in an ideal location and gives the Packers the skill set that the current TE room lacks (plus familiarity with Rodgers).

Timeline would have him back around week 3, with opening day an outside possibility. Set backs are always a risk too, as we well know.

Void year with space now says they’re working on a signing that might use serious amount of cap hit I suspect. Also if Tonyan does well they could extend before void hit

I like the move. There are too many holes in the roster to fix without having to make TE a priority. Unless Tonyan follows in Bahktiari's footsteps, he should be back for the beginning of next season.

I really think we owe it to Rodgers to attempt to keep some players of familiarity. This was a move representing that. Especially if he’s available inside the first quarter of the season or so.

Tons of reports that BakhT was way ahead of schedule too and some thought he'd be ready for opening day. Turns out he wasn't really ready even 6 months after that even.

Tonyan "should" be back sooner than David, but until he is, he's not.

I would guess that the Packers have enough data in Tonyan's rehab progress after 4 1.2 months out from his ACL injury /surgery to make an informed decision. There can always be setbacks but I think this is good sign & good signing.

Bahk not being ready right at a year is not shocking. ACL is a one year injury +/- . Yes they can get better rehab but they’re also HUGE people putting GIGANTIC stresses on those ligaments

I think so too, but we're not even a year removed from saying someone else was doing well and might be back for the start of the season when in reality he wasn't really ready for any of the season and people are talking about a guy that has the same injury and would only be 1 month ahead of that guys schedule in rehab and we're talking about him being ready for the season again.

I'm guessing he's put on the PUP from the start and we see him around week 4-6 at the earliest.

My conclusion is that any player needing to be signed will leak optimistic news for obvious reasons.
Yet I just feel like a 235lb TE will heal up faster than a 310lb Lineman. Those bigger boys have more stress on the area of concern by default.
I’m going to guess initial reports are true and he’s back somewhere in the 1-2nd Quarter of the season at the latest (call it week 8)

If that’s the case? I’m ok with Mercedes, Deguara + Davis and maybe draft a Day 3 TE to round out the depth/ST

Daniel Bellinger is my day 3 TE looking out for now IF Gute doesn’t want to take one earlier. Ruckert is my favorite most complete all around TE (not as high a receiving threat as some others but talking all around) and I couldn’t pass him up in the 3rd regardless of signing Tonyan IMO but understand

Yes. Him or Isaiah Likely. He’s a guy that seems to have a good all around play strengths (excelling at Receiving) but minor concerns in the blocking area. Yet with big play potential. He’s also coming in near later Day 2 on many Mocks, which is right in our crosshairs. I doubt he makes round 4 because of limited top end TE prospects.
15.3 per reception and Paint Specialist, getting better the closer the Pylons. Lives for the Endzone. Will challenge the secondary if they aren’t careful? he’ll become an NFL TD machine within 2-3 years with an elite QB. He’s partly responsible for the resurgence of Coastal Carolina (in my mind )

Assuming he's fine; glad to have him back. Just hope they don't use that short pass out in the flat to him so much. It is just not effective if they use it too much. It's like a 1 yard square out.

I read somewhere that the Packers added a void year to the contract to lower the cap hit for 2022.

he's not particularly speedy, so i don't think of him as a long range down field threat, but what a nice red zone target he would make. consensus seems to be late third round pick.

Sounds about right. I saw him floating into the 4th Round. But he’s a top 6-8 range TE prospect.
But Lively is in the top 1/2 of that grouping as a pure pass catcher.

A shout out to Big Bobby! He’s a welcome returning addition. Hope his recovery gets him safely back early in the regular season. Isaiah Lively could be a nice stop gap on 3rd downs in the meantime
