With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread the Packers probably could not have wanted, historically-speaking, to be playing the Philadelphia Eagles this week. The Philly club has put the hurt on the Pack too many times in years past on occasions just like this one.

The Eagles were the only team ever to beat Vince Lombardi's Packers in a championship or playoff game.

No Packers' fan over 25 can ever forget "4th & 26" in the 2004 Wild Card playoff.

The dismal 1970's might have been a little less dismal if not for the Eagles derailing a couple of seemingly budding Packers playoff teams in 1974 and '78.

Recall how the vengeance mission went, after "4th & 26," the Packers went to Philly for a 2004 prime time regular season game. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200412050phi.htm

They "schooled" the Packers again in Mike McCarthy's first go at them in 2006: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200610020phi.htm

Hopes that the Packers might be turning around after their 10-6 "Majik" season in 1989 were snuffed out after a 1990 game with the Eagles. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/199012160phi.htm. Green Bay didn;t win again the rest of that year and only 4 times over the next 18 games, bringing down coach Lindy Infante.

In 1999 the two clubs essentially swapped head coaches. The Eagles hired Packers' assistant Andy Reid while Green Bay settled for just fired Philadelphia hc Ray Rhodes. Reid went on to an exceptionally successful career as one of the best in the league for 14 years there; taking his teams to the playoffs year after year, making 5 conference championship game appearances and a Super Bowl trip. Rhodes was a one year 8-8 experiment that failed and he never head coached in the NFL again.

Not that the Packers haven't gotten in their "licks" on the Philadelphia. In 1993 they lured the greatest Eagle Reggie White to Green Bay in free agency; one of the pivotal moves that ultimately issued in a Super Bowl Championship. http://blacksportsonline.com/home/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/reggie-white-eagles-kelly-green.jpg

The Packers won an improbable season opener against the Eagles in 2007 that started them on a 13-3 season and an NFC title game appearance. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200709090gnb.htm

The Packers also won the 2010 opener at Lambeau over Philly http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/201009120phi.htm and finally exorcised their postseason demons with the Eagles by beating them again in the Wild Card playoff en route to the Super Bowl XLV Championship.

In their last regular season meeting, only two years ago that seems much longer now, the Packers won in a laugher. http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/n...rs-53-20/bf0ecc5b-4877-40b5-8064-2baf9bf039bc

Monday night's game will be the 41st regular season meeting between these two clubs, dating back to 1933. The Packers lead the all-time 26-14 while the Eagles are up 2-1 in playoff/championship games.

The Packers won their first 10 meetings in a row over Philadelphia in the days of Curly Lambeau. Since then Green Bay is only slightly ahead in the regular season count at 16-14.

Mike McCarthy is the only Packers' coach besides Lambeau to own a winning record over the Eagles, with 6 or more games, at 4-2. Mike Holmgren managed only to break even with them at 3-3. Mike Sherman 1-4. Vince Lombardi only faced them once after the 1960 championship game defeat: a 49-0 revenge in 1962.

With slender playoff hopes on the line Monday night we shouldn't be too comfortable. We have been here before with Philadelphia.

With the exception of the 2010 season when the Packers won twice in Philly they have been throttled like no place else with the exception of Arrowhead stadium.

The Packers record (2-4) at Arrowhead actually isn't that terrible. The team lost nine consecutive games at Philadelphia before winning there twice during the 2010 season.

The way I see it, if the Packers lose to the Eagles on Monday night their playoff goose is pretty much cooked. AR's "we can run the table" bloviating will then fall flat on its face and this team will have to face the facts -- they are not a good team.

The Philly game will be interesting though. A strong defense and a not-so-good offense. Since the Packers' O has picked up a bit, you would think that this matchup favors the Pack. Carson Wentz is no Kirk Cousins. He's a struggling rookie, and he might just be the guy to give the Packers' sorry excuse for DBs a reprieve. Philly does have a decent run game with Matthews and Sproles, who might be able to keep the Packers' offense off the field enough to win the game.

Like I said, if the Packers don't win this one, I think they're pretty much done. Detroit at 7-4, all they need do is win 2 more games and the Packers are out. And no, GB at 4-7 won't run the table. I'll bet my house on that.

Plus, I do think that the Packers have lost some fire; it may have not been there for some time. Nobody is truly leading them right now. I don't blame AR for that. He's a different kind of leader, not a rah-rah leader, but right now, maybe that's what they need. Peppers could have been that guy, but he's playing out his last days and he looks like it; nobody is listening to Mike Daniels; CM III is not very inspiring right now; and MM? pad levels, processes and variables, and not winning individual matches -- the guy is nothing but a broken record whose pressers are an exercise in frustration and stupidity for those who can stand to listen.

I agree with most of your post. While the Eagles have a decent run game Ryan Mathews hasn't practiced so far tbis week because of a knee injury and is iffy to play on Monday.
