Jeff Hafley is mentioned as a possibly head coaching job somewhere next year as a defense coach.

When teams are looking for in head coaches, my question is this.

Why are head coaches always carry a title of offensive or defensive????

Regardless of who you are, don't head coaches hire their own assistance coaches in defense or offense positions?

What difference does it make if the head coach is either or??

Your Thoughts

Because almost every single HC has a forteit for one side of the ball.

Almost all head coaches were previously OCs or DCs. Typically, these coaches get noticed because their scheme has done will or shown something interesting. These former coordinators, now HCs, are understandable reluctant to give up the skillset that got them the job. Most continue being heavily involved with that side of the ball.

Typically, this means former OC HCs tend to keep calling plays, for example.

One thing I forgot:

Offensive coaches tend to get hired as HCs more often because of the importance of the QB position. If you make the jump from OC -> HC, you probably showed something good by either elevating a young QB or Fixing a veteran.

Personally, I like offensive minded HCs for that reason. Get him in, get your younger QB in a system, and then you're tied together in a stable system. If you're a DC -> HC, you hire a great OC, he does well, he gets poached, and now you have to replace your OC and potentially change systems as a result.
