My sister's gathered around and were screaming at the TV. I was about 5 but I remember it clearly. My Dad called them The Beatle Bugs. I don't think he was recovered from Elvis and my two older sisters.
The Beatles appeared 2 more times on the show that winter. It kicked off the British Invasion: Rolling Stones, DC 5, Jerry and the Pacemakers, Petula Clark, Freddie and the Dreamers, etc.etc.etc.

Freddie and the Dreamers, I can't think of them without thinking about that goofy dance.

Oh my gawd, and that squawk that Freddie used to unleash ... it was his schtick I guess. Looking at the video now makes me shut it off. I have a USB for my car filled with music from that era because THAT is what was playing in my house.

Freddie passed about 12 years or so ago. Believe he had Parkinson's.

If you haven't watch the "Money Heist" series on Netflix, I found it to be very entertaining. Give it more than 3 episodes, one needs to get up to speed on the characters, motives, etc. If you do end up watching it all, be sure to watch the additional features about Money Heist. They really go into depth on each character, how the series was written and made, etc.

Anyone around at the time recalls that first night early in 1964 when they debuted on the Ed Sullivan Show. Girls screaming. Parents eyes popping out. And kids heading to record stores the next day.
Believe it or not, that was the first time I heard of them. I was home on leave from the Air Force when they appeared. My little brother was telling me about them and how they were big hits. I'd never heard of them. Although I never became a fan of theirs, they did put out some good music.

My car listening is Sirius XM 50s, and 60s, along with a couple of news sources, sports, and a Canadian station.

The world kind of needed that shot in the arm. They arrived just a few months after the Kennedy assassination and spirits were at an ebb.

Thanks milani. I forgot just how many bands were part of the “British Invasion” - it was a LOT.

The 60s is still my favorite decade. How ironic that the greatest decade for rock n roll was followed by the execrable disco decade, dominated by the BGs.

But every band, even the Stones and Pink Floyd, wrote some disco songs like Miss You and Just Another Brick in the Wall.

Hey V did you spend any time in Vietnam? We’re talking early 60s so probably not, but it was close.

I loved the Beatles and their constant innovation. But my favorite band was and still is the Stones.

Parents wanted their daughters to date the Beatles and avoid the Stones at all costs.

Yes. I was there in late 1963 into 1964. Right at the start. I returned to the States late January of 1964 and took leave about a week before they were on Sullivan. I think I went on leave around the 2nd or 3rd of February. I can't remember the exact date. That's probably why I never heard of them.

Not any more. Not a hard dance. Especially with a girl once upon a time.
Back to the Future is new stuff to me. In fact, Michael J. Fox was in a fantasy baseball league with me way back in the day, before he fell ill. Really nice guy to talk to online. My cousin who knew him before we formed the league was also a member. He knew his baseball.

You were there right around the time Diem was killed. Did you wear regular military duds? I heard that many of those sent over in 1963 wore civilian clothes in order to give the populace the idea that these were simply advisors.

That's an interesting story V. Yeah you were trying to stay alive. Kinda hard to focus on anything else. I'm glad you made it back.

Hmmm, I know you're right about the "advisor" role the military was paying in Vietnam. That may still have been going on in 63 or 63. Our involvement in Vietnam dramatically increased under Johnson - so 64, 65, 66. Nasty times.
