The extra long Janis thread will probably get some extra action after this season, but given that his impact on ST's has been missing and the fact that Geronimo Allison, an UDFA Rookie who barely made the PS is getting reps in front of him at WR and looking pretty good, I would be surprised to see Janis in GB next year.
Jarrett Bush spent several years with the Packers where his primary role was gunner, while getting limited snaps as s dime corner and emergency safety. Every team has a couple of guys who make the game day roster for their special teams play; with the Packers it's Janis and Elliott.

Those guys need to be able do something as a positional player if pressed into service or getting a few rotational snaps, at least to the extent of not ******** up.

If the Packers find a guy who looks good as a gunner in preseason who has better promise as a positional player, then Janis' usefulness will have been nearly exhausted. If they don't? He could be right back again as a #6 receiver.

Just from what I have seen out of Janis this year on Special Teams and at WR, he won't be difficult to replace. I understood why he made the 53 after his stellar play on Special Teams last year, but either teams saw enough film on him and learned how to defend against him or he just isn't the guy he was last year. He has also made a few bone headed mistakes on ST (running out of bounds and back in, failing to down balls before they went into the endzone, missed tackles. As far as his abilities at WR, I think we all know where he stands there. IMO a guy that is kept on the 53 strictly for his abilities on Special Teams better be impactful and Janis hasn't been.

Actually, a special teams specialist needs to make the 46 man game day roster. While Janis has not been as effective this year, he is usually the first guy to the returner which counts for something in redirecting the guy.

Believer me, I'm no Janis fan. Never have been. Before anybody knew he couldn't learn to run routes, it was evident he couldn't track the deep ball. To his credit, he's gotten away from body catching every ball.

But it's like anything else...who else ya got? Like I said, they may turn up somebody in next year's camp.

The qualifications are pretty simple but not all that common: (1) speed, (2) strength to beat the initial block off the line, sometimes a double team and (3) a willingness and sufficient physicality to tackle. Most WRs are disqualified on (2) and/or (3). So, typically you need to find a CB to do the job and many of them are not accustomed to working off of blocks.

Think you need to add a (4) ....ability to track a punt and actually down it, Janis has failed a couple of times with that this year. Might be the similar issue he has with playing WR?

I agree with you, for now, Janis is "the man" who is going to keep playing that gunner position. However, I just don't see coaches viewing film in the off season and seeing that this is a guy who needs to be on the 2017 roster. All that being said, I hope he does some really special things over the course of the next 5 games *insert grin* to better his chances for next year.

We've also seen him misjudge the flight of a kickoff. Yeah, it's part of the same problem I would guess.

You don't hear it talked about much in football because the ball is big and it doesn't travel very far compared to what a baseball centerfielder needs to handle, but it's the same issue. Either you can track a ball and adjust to the flight or you can't. You can't teach it.

You know what I like to say: "big possums walk late". We can use any big possum we can find, not matter how surprising. ;)

My Possum selections are Cook on offense and any of a number of guys playing defense. The 2015 and first half of 2016 concerns over our offense are pretty much gone, especially when the running game is clicking. However, our defense will need to continue getting turnovers and figure out how the 29th ranked pass defense can get better.

The way the offense is playing now, any of the skill position players is capable on being a big possum on any given day. And of course, the QB always has the potential to be the Possum that Ate Tokyo.

From where I sit, if there was a safety on this team having a Pro Bowl season it was Burnett. While not the beneficiary of having 3 or 4 balls air mailed into his gut, he's been the most consistent secondary player game in and game out, and if there's any glue to be had back there, he's the guy providing it.

Hyde's a guy worth watching. Earlier in the season he seemed to be trailing in coverage so often it was hurting my eyes. He's been in and out with injuries so maybe that had something to do with it. But the way Lockett and Diggs were contained, that falls largely to Hyde's credit. So maybe he's a big possum prospect going forward.

But in the end, the big possums need to show up in the pass rush to limit exposure on the back side. We seem to get rotating flashes from Perry, Matthews and Peppers from one game to the next. If they can get it together for a "possum collective" going forward, they might be able to do something worth remembering.
