ESPN classics just ran the 1998 Wildcard Playoff game between the Packers and the 49ers. The Packers got robbed when the refs didn't call Jerry Rice's fumble late in the 4th quarter.

In retrospect it is very hard to believe that Ron Wolf could overlook Andy Reed to succeed Mike Holmgren as HC in favor of Ray Rhodes.

That's because Wolf didn't overlook Reed, he obviously sandbagged the Packers with Rhodes and eventually with Mike Sherman. Wolf wanted to protect his legacy in Green Bay as the only GM to win a Super Bowl with the Packers in 29 seasons.

It has worked beautifully for Wolf because going into the 2005 season, he is the only GM to win a Super Bowl with the Packers in 37 seasons.

You really a conspiracy theorist. No matter how you look at it, the end result of Wolf's hiring hasn't been very good. Rhoads was a very bad hire. Mike Sherman as GM and coach was plain stupid. But what has really happened is that Wolf's legacy, like it or not, has been tarnished by those events, as it was by the some of his drafting in the later years. For as much as I respect the work Ron Wolf has done, I don't hold him in nearly such high esteem as those who wear rose colored glasses do.
