All the void years won't hit, as he likely is in final year or more likely one more give fiscal connected to him. They'll roll forward to like void years do once walked from.

His health has clearly made Gute and company not a fan of the signing for sure and they had to do something to lesson his blow some.
Tyni if that played out his Dead $ in 2027 is $26.3Mil.

Any way you slice Banks he’s gonna cost a serious chunk when we cut unless he gets healthy and can be an actual player for us along the front. Best case he gets right and can be a middling starter for us and sees into 2028 for us…worst case we are heading towards a massive post June cut that is costly next offseason

I'm complaining too much. We have a good team and if we play our cards right, next year will be better. I do get tired of hearing how we draft and develop O line. I just don't see it. Tom, for instance, should have started day one. I say that to point out he wasn't developed by us.
2027 should be better. Maybe a lot better.

We could see the talent last year and we’re 1 Tie away from a 10-2 start. That’s after many predicted the Lions would dominate and how tough or Division was. Imo we were 1 or 2 players health from a Division Winner.

Let’s just hope we can pick up where we left off mid season. The key imo will be at least average health and Parsons displaying a full recovery. That guy really limits what an O can do game plan wise. Parsons recovery is key because he’s one of the 3 best Edge rushers in the league. Only Myles Garrett is slightly better imo.

And well, he did so well when he played left tackle, I'd be hard pressed to say he shouldn't have started. I remember one year in the playoffs I think against tampa. We moved Turner to left tackle where he was bad and moved another bad lineman to right tackle. So for that game we ended up with both tackies being bad instead of at least keeping Turner on the right where he was at least good. Probably before Tom though. The only time for a long time that I have felt comfortable with O line coaching was Stenavich. Fans liked Campen but I never did. He taught pass blocking and we rarely run blocked well.
At the end of last season, looking ahead to this season, I felt pretty good that the Packers would have a good starting OL. From left to right - Morgan, Banks, Rhyan, Belton, and Tom.

That has been cahnged, with neither Banls or Belton playing well in camp. That's a real setback if it stays that way.
Ok fine. The point being is while that restructure gave us some immediate cap relief, it also in turn pushed more $$ into future years. Matter of fact he (Banks) has void years that go through the 2030 season. Thats 5 years of Cap hits committed.

I understand the premise of freeing up capital. I just think we could’ve freed up $6mil instead of $12.5Mil on his deal in particular and looked under other rocks for more. Instead we’re 100% locked through 2027 and a very hard Contract out of $16.3mil dead in 2028. That’s becomes a 4 year deal starting in 2025. The effect is similar to a 1+ year extension. Earlier we had a medium contract out in 2027 and in March that became a hard out in 2028.
Banks has void years through 2030? Yikes I had no idea the NFL allows for such a long timeline. The rules are the rules and everyone plays the same set. I'm not a huge fan of void years anyway, and this is just one more reason.

I understand the rationale for voidable years - lower the cap hit in a given year(s). Just seems like the max should be 2 years, maybe 3. Probably much ado about nothing on my part. i just don't like it.

Gluten has been very good in his use of FA - but Banks and Hobbs are his worst two moves, IMO, and they happened in the same year. Oh well, can't always bay 1.000.

And it sounds like Banks is injured, or not playing well in camp, or both? Same for Belton. That's a drag - I thought they were at least penciled in as starters at LG and RG this year.

Sounds like the 5th round pick, Jager (sp?) is playing well. It seems like forever since the Packers have had a reliable starting OL.

He only has 2 void years. 2029 and 2030. 2026, 27, and 28 are presumed to be years he plays for us.

He's certainly going to be on the roster in 2026. 27 is the first year his dead cap and cap savings roughly equals, so he's probably around next year too, but he has a 9M roster bonus. If we think the knee is toast, he could be gone regardless.

28 is the year his cap number is ~8M more than his dead cap. He would also turn 30 that year. It would not surprise me if he is gone regardless that year.

That makes sense. I'm not sure about the problem with his knee. Just seems likley he'll be in GB this year and probably next.

Hobbs was a total desperation of need signing and yeah that one sucked.

Banks was an obvious overpay and I think most of us knew it at the time. Injuries haven't helped him or the Packers, so that is hard to fault Gute on if it is what eventually makes him a bust. I haven't given up on him just yet.
Banks appears to be a guy who got paid and now is half ***ing it. This will be his last contract.

Regarding Banks, There’s going to be quite a few questions answered this season. Just hoping we didn’t miss on both Hobbs and Banks because that was a bad FA move thus far. Sometimes we get a little too cute with contracts like this that weren’t really deserved. Other times we grab a guy like Malik with a 7th and get 2yrs and a potential Top 100 pick kicked back.

I think with the amount of guaranteed money that players are now getting, it isn't that uncommon for them to take the money (make bank) and run.

No coincidence that this may have happened with "Banks".

Banks seems to have just been overpayed. We saw something that nobody else did and apparently doesn't exist. 49ers didn't try to keep him very hard and he's never been to a pro bowl.

Oh I agree with you that as of now, it looks like the Packers way overpaid for Banks. That may change if he ever gets to play "healthy".

The point of my last post was just to say something I have said many times before. With the amount of guaranteed money paid out in the NFL, teams can be their own worst enemies, shelling out enough money to 1 player, for 50 people to live a comfortable lifetime on. If teams really expect to see 100% effort from all the players that receive that kind of money, they are fooling themselves.

It seems like everyone gets overpaid in FA. That becomes painful when the guys bust, as Hobbs did and Banks seems to be doing.

The best thing to do is cut bait. Burton is playing well in camp, and Monk is on the upswing, with Belton going the other way. The starting OL may look a lot different than what we expected before TC.

I hope Belton can do something. It's possible he's only a L tackle or maybe just not good anywhere. But maybe it makes sense to start giving him reps at L guard. At least it's physically closer to where he's always played.

Agreed. He played well toward the end of last season. It's worth it to give him some time.

What position did he play in college?

While that is what you do when the dead cap hits are manageable, in the case of Aaron Banks, it financially would be a big mistake to cut him. His current dead cap is $36M+. Add to that his base salary is a measly $1.215M, so no, cutting him isn't the right thing to do.

This is the problem with guaranteed large sums of money. While it is a GUARANTEE that the player will be paid and the team will have to account for all those guarantees on their cap, there is ZERO guarantees that a player will play football at that rate of pay or in some cases, even play.

I could care less about the money aspect of it, the Packers print their own money. However, the negative effect guaranteed money has on the cap and the decrease in the quality of football that a team can put out on to the field because of it, that bothers me.

L tackle. I don't think he ever played anywhere else
Thanks. The Packers seem to do this with damn near every O lineman - play them out of the position they played - exclusively - in college. Belton is an example, and Morgan is a perfect example.

In Morgan's case - I don't get drafting a guy in the first round when there is a clear starter. For the Packers that was Wallace at LT. I get that competition should be added, but that can be done outside the first round.

Then again, it takes time to adjust to life in the NFL. Morgan didn't turn any heads at G, but the experience was valuable. This season, he is at LT and has been playing well. Better days are coming for him.

You have to remember a LARGE amount of the time the best OL in high school become LTs in college....and the best of the best OL TYPICALLY become the LTs in college as well. We've seen a little bit of a surge of RTs really being special as well (but again we are talking the overall norms).

That's why many teams, not just GB will target the best OL, which often are LTs to move around. It is grossly easier "normally" to move inside than it is to move a guy outside, but that doesn't mean it is a sure thing. Most guys are shifted to interior OL positions due to a lack of physical traits to succeed on the outside, whether that is quickness with foot work, length in both body type as well as arms and honestly sometimes body composition can too play a factor. Yes, some get moved inside out of need and just excel and stay....others yet to be the brain of the OL (Center) because of need...but again overall most interior OL are there because they cannot succeed outside, while a lot of outise (LT and RT) lineman are there because they're some of the few that can succeed outside where things spread wider, need for quickness is higher and you are facing some of the most athletic guys that exist on the defensive side - you're not a tackle because you cannot succeed inside...

Interesting stuff. For all the reasons you mention - I think most would agree that LT is the most demanding position on the OL (ok, RT for left-handed QBs).

I can see where it should be easier for a T to move inside to G, rather than G to T. If Morgan has a great year at LT, and I think that could very well happen, then using a first round pick to get him will look like a smart move. Regardless of position, it takes time to adjust to the NFL, and two years isn't an unreasonable amount of time. Morgan is ready to start at LT.

Amongst the most informed people I'd say you're absolutely right, crazy thing is we know for a fact Morgan was viewed as the winner at LT last year BUT the team did the get best total 5 out there, not the best LT at LT, the best LG at LG...type approach which is why Morgan played "out of position".

Morgan at the WORST is going to be Walker level of play we got last year.

Yeah well it’s our MO to really bring guys on gradual, even from Day 1. At least as long as we have an incumbent Starter in house. That’s where we were with Rasheed. The other aspect is Jordan Morgan might’ve won a starting spot but he was injured his Rookie season very early on in Camp (2024). Then we got him back and in Game 2 he aggravated a shoulder injury. Then we get him back and ramp him up and he hurts it again Mid November. So injury really hampered him early on and we shut him down onto IR.

I still don't get why Morgan wasn't played at LT last year. Walker had certainly played well enough to win a starting job in the previous seasons. Ironically his play slipped last year. But Walker was the clear choice to start at LT last September.

So Morgan had to play somewhere. He is a talented guy regardless of position. LT is just his best spot. Walker, on the other hand, could likely only play LT.

Well with Morgan at LT hopefully that is set for many years. Trying to set the OL is like playing whack-a-mole. LT and C look set, but Banks and Belton have slipped at the G spots. It seems to never end.

They made it clear why, they chose the best collective 5 not the best LT at LT, best LG at LG and so on. Our guard play last year was not good, part due to Banks health, Morgan not a natural there and Belton suffering to hold serve when called on there.
