I've felt all along that part of the problem was that we have too many young receivers with very similar talent and skill levels, all of them good - but none of them truly superior to the rest, so none of them really get the opportunity to step forward and separate themselves from the rest of the group. When they're all really good, it's extremely difficult for any one of them to establish himself as "the" guy who eventually shows that he's the one who deserves all the footballs. In order to develop into "that guy", one of them really needs to be seeing a lot more targets. And that just does not happen with this situation. I've been saying for a couple of years that for all we know, we may very well have 3, 4, or even 5 potential Donald Drivers on this squad, but we'll never know it until we trade a couple of them away, or lose them to free agency, and then watch them catch fire somewhere else. Because there are so many of them, these guys are getting 50, 60-some targets a year, and it wasn't until Driver started getting 130, 140, 170 footballs every year before he became Donald Driver. You could maybe say the same about James "alligator arms" Jones, and several other Packer greats who sucked in their first couple of seasons - but since everyone else sucked even more, they kept seeing footballs coming at them, and they eventually got pretty damned good at their job. We hit the jackpot in 22/23, bringing 6 or 7 really good WRs or pass-catching TEs into town through the draft or UDFA, but IMO it created an "embarrassment of riches". That's like 5 years' worth of talented recevers all showing up in the space of 2 seasons and saying, "here I am, throw me some passes." I honestly don't think they ever sent more than 4 that entire game, nor do I remember them blitzing Love when we played them a few weeks earlier. They apparently did not need to. As I recall, their linebackers just dropped into coverage pretty much every damned dropback and interfered with every single pass route right from the snap. When the other team is able to spend the entire afternoon chasing your quarterback up one side of the backfield and down the other using only 4 guys to humiliate all 5 of your offensive linemen, good freakin' luck. Gute's answer to that has been Aaron Banks (325 lbs) and Anthony Belton (335 lbs). We shall see how that turns out.
