In later rounds of the draft (Day 2), need becomes more of a directive for who is chosen, namely taking the BPA at a position of need. BPA is almost always the rule in the top 5 of Round One, in deeper drafts one can even consider BPA up to pick 10 or 12. '09 is looking like an average to above average draft, with OTs being the most favorable choice in the top 10, probably 3 taken; DEs might see 2 go Top Ten. LB, DT, QB, WR & CB will have one each. Where GB fits into any of those choices remains to be seen. With TT & his scouts drawing up this season's board, knowing they NEED big bodies along both lines, it's hard to imagine Crabtree going at #9 to the Packers. At some point a GM must pass on BPA strategy & focus on more imminent holes on the roster. It's all in how team's draw up their respective formulas for grading out the talent. Here's mine: 1) overall talent 2) character 3) intelligence 4) health 5) roster deficiencies (need) If I were to assist TT this is how I would rate individual players, on a scale of A to F with "A" being worth 5 points & "F" worth 0 points, for each category. So if Orakpo, Raji, Jenkins & Crabtree were available at Pick #9 (pipe dream, I know but for the sake of this post...) here's how I would submit my advice to my GM: Orakpo - overall talent A=5 points, character B=4 points, intelligence C=3points, health B=4 points, current roster deficiency A=5 points - total of 21 Raji 5, 4, 4, 4, 5 - total of 22 Jenkins 5, 5, 5, 4, 2 - total of 21 Crabtree 5, 4, 3, 3, 1 - total of 16 Since Raji is the clear-cut favorite out of these 4 he would be the choice. As a sliding scale to break a tie I would narrow it down one category at a time, (since in my grading I believe them to be in order of greatest significance) starting by eliminating from #5 & working backwards to #1. So if it was down to just Orakpo & Jenkins, Jenkins is the choice because of higher grades at the more crucial areas of evaluation - overall talent, character & intelligence. If TT's draft grade rationale is in any way similar to what I've put forth here, it may explain why a BPA strategy may supercede need, especially in Round One, specifiaclly picks one thru ten. In '05 BPA was the rule for just about all Day One picks by TT. The greatest need was O-lineman yet the first 3 picks were QB, FS & WR. He waited until Day Two round 5 before he selected Junius Coston & then Will Witticker in round 7. The loss of Darren Sharper was addressed in the '05 draft before the offensive guard needs.
