Sufficient Cap space.  Thompson did this early in his tenure, signing Woodson and Pickett under similar circumstances.Once the GM is rolling and he has his guys, assuming he's drafting well, he'll typically extend his good players, let the mediocre ones leaves, and keep back filling with young, cheap draft picks.  If he isn't drafting well, he'll end up fired before too long.This past year is probably far closer to normal, though I'd argue it's about the same as the first 1/2 of Thompson's tenure as well.  Sign a few cheap bodies for 1-2 year or so.  Wagner and Kirksey vs. Brandon Chillar (sp?), Duke Preston, and Anthony Smith.  And many seem to think that Kirksey and Wagner are likely cuts.  Those contracts in particular aren't painful, but get too many wrong, and you're back to being a former-GM.</blockquote>
