It's a vulnerability, though improved with Matthews moving to ILB on more than half his snaps. That said, when you move your All-Pro edge rusher to ILB, you know something's amiss that's not limited to one weak position. Hawk grows increasingly slow. He's become like the overseer who wanders the field pointing instructions to his farmhands with his cane. The dirty work, like run blitzes, are left to Matthews as Will backer. The ILB/nickel back/safety tackling has been shoddy at times. This is a defense that MUST motor and pursue to limit yards after catch, which would seem to be a particular necessity against the Brady underneath passing game. There's not much physicality in the middle of the field. Unfortunately high energy pursuit seems to arise only when McCarthy calls out the defense for bad tackling in the press. I did not see that this week. Burnett and Hyde are the decent tacklers most of the time in this group; Clinton-Dix not so much as he tends to fly in for a low strike and misses too often. They're all pretty good coverage guys, except Hyde lacks the speed to stay with WRs/slot guys running down the seam. Richardson is the 3rd./4th. safety depending where Hyde is slotted at the moment. Richardson is the most physical of the bunch, though not quite with it as regards Capers' complexities and not a man coverage guy...he might have a role in zone defending all those passes Brady likes to throw between the back of the box and under the safeties. The Packers had Matthews on the sidelines for several 3rd. and long plays against Minnesota with Hawk out there in coverage. I saw 3 such instances; there may have been more. If I see that again I expect Brady to be enjoying some lunch.
