I disagree. Sometimes you have to keep your eye on the real prize.
The Brewers have a very successful organization from top to bottom. The organization is known for maximizing a bottom-third payroll through elite scouting and a unified developmental philosophy, the franchise thrives from top to bottom. What this has done is put a winning team on the field in Milwaukee almost every season in the last 10 years. They are well on their way to winning the NL Central again for the 5th time in 6 seasons.
Why is all this winning so important, especially for a small market team? Putting fans in the stands and more importantly, keeping the money from broadcasting deals flowing.
So while a World Series pennant in Milwaukee would be awesome, my guess is that Attanasio, Arnold and Schlesinger are super happy with the way the organization is running from year to year.
So sure, if they can work out a deal that brings Skubal here for 3 months and it is the Brewers only having to trade players that represent depth at a position in their farm system, then maybe a trade is smart. However, as I said, trading key current and future cogs like Logan Henderson and Ashby, just to try and go all in on a potential WS, that would be stupid.
One doesn't have to look too far from Am Fam Field to find what can happen to a small market team that is mismanaged. A team that was having a ton of success from season to season and then decided to go all in to try and win a championship...I'm looking at you Jon Horst and the Milwaukee Bucks.
Thanks for your comments here Poker.
"Putting fans in the stands and more importantly, keeping the money from broadcasting deals flowing."
That's well said and describes how the owners have managed this team for as long as I remember.
The Brewers regularly get 40,000 plus fans at
every home game. To your point, look at other small market teams and you'll see this level of fan support isn't there, not even close. The Brewers' front office, the farm system, the talent, and a consistently competitive team keeps fans engaged, and going to games. This is essential for a small market team to generate the $$$ needed to field a competitive team.
So yeah, I don't think they're gonna get Skubal for depth position players from their minor league clubs. It will almost certainly take the guys you list:
RHP Logan Henderson
OF Josh Adamczewski
LHP Aaron Ashby
And to anyone with common sense, that's a lot to give up for an ace pitcher on a 3 month rental.
But this is about doing what it takes to make a final acquisition to put forward a true WS contender come October, and to finally bring a WS pennant to Am Fam field. Without Skubal, the Brewers are still tied with the always-talented Dodgers for the best record n baseball. Put Skubal in the mix and the Brewers likely end with the best record in MLB. Much more importantly, it puts two stoppers in the pitching rotation, and that's what it takes to win a WS. IMO great pitching beats great hitting (and in foootball, great D usually wins out over great O).
I'm not trying to change your mind because 1) I can't and 2) your points are all valid. This would require the owners to take on some risk. I think it's worth it. And as talented as Henderson, Adamczewski, and to a lesser extent Ashby sre - losing them is not gonna radically deplete the farm system, or hurt the current P lineup.
And the decision will probably be based on the owners' prediction for what will bring in fans in the future. I think a WS win would lock that in for at least a few years.
Sorry for the long response. I respect your position on this, and if I was thinking with my head, I'd agree. But I'm thinking here with my heart. Milwaukee is a great baseball city, always has been. The last WS championship was in the 1950s, so about 65 years ago. Let's end the drought.
