It isn’t that they don’t bring in talent, it’s that they don’t draft first round talent and they have to bring in that talent from other teams. No team should have a strategy to draft players in the first round with the notion that they can “see” the potential in a first round pick and develop that player to be worthy a first round selection. Gut is a product of the Packers organization. I think the Packers have over estimated their abilities because of the talent of Aaron Rodgers as quarterback. They have overlooked their failure to return to the Super Bowl which can be attributed to the poor decisions in the drafts after 2010 to draft top offensive skill players in the first round. There is a reason players are drafted in the first round. They are perceived to be the most talented, the best.
Gut has drafted 16 O lineman since he was promoted in 2018. He has signed or traded for two first round picks from other teams. The Packers need a total reset in their personnel department. It isn’t that they don’t bring in talent, it’s that they don’t draft first round talent and they have to bring in that talent from other teams. No team should have a strategy to draft players in the first round with the notion that they can “see” the potential in a first round pick and develop that player to be worthy a first round selection. That player should have demonstrated on the field in college they were talented enough to be selected in the first round. They need a Ron Wolf kind of GM who recognizes talent. Those players don’t always succeed, but some teams are perennial failures regardless of who they draft. Football is a team sport. QBs and coaches don’t win games, teams do. Coaches don’t have to be bad to lose, they can be not good enough. The Packers should have a hard reset instead of dragging this out. The current GM and coaches are not good enough. He physically can’t take the pounding. The Packers would be better off to trade some of their top players and get more draft picks.
