You're acting as though there's this single opinion out there in the "football world" that agrees with you. Yes, there is a lot of hype around him from some; there is some skepticism from others. I fall more into that latter camp. When you factor his limited role in any offense (it's going to be tough to find a better situation for him than New Orleans with Payton), his age, his injury history, and his contract status, I just find it really hard to believe that someone pays up a 1st round pick for him. I hope they don't! I don't want to see a powerful NFC rival get stronger because someone decides to be stupid. I would be surprised if they got a 2nd even. You're talking about giving up a premium pick for a 30 year old, RFA gadget player who believes himself to be a franchise QB. What are you going to do after 2020 when he's a UFA and wants to get a shot under center AND get paid like it? Are you going to pay 20+M (pretty modest starting QB money) for a 31 year old trick play specialist? Or are you going to franchise tag him? At what position? He's always been listed at QB so it would be hard to make the case that his tag should be WR or RB. The QB tag number is 26M. Even the WR and RB numbers are 18 and 12 respectively-- still a LOT to be paying a gadget guy. Or the other alternative is to let him walk and try to find work as a QB, in which case you've traded a 1st or 2nd round pick for one season of service. None of it makes any sense to me. He's an impressive athlete and his plays are unconventional and therefore very exciting, but his production is still modest. Unless someone thinks they have a full time position for him, he's a limited player.
