No, you don't often win a game you lose by 30 because of punting, but it definitely contributes. This was one of those games where the ball started rolling downhill and they just couldn't stop it. The 49er's are good, no doubt about it, but I don't think they're really 30 points better. We've been on the winning side and losing side of these games. I know enough to know the final score in this game was probably accurate of what happened in the game, but not very accurate in terms of the quality of both teams. But early on a few plays differently and this game probably ends much differently too. Not saying they'd win. But our defense was doing well actually. but you take any 2 teams and put on at the 50 consistently and one inside their 20 consistently to start drives for a half of football, it makes a difference. It makes a difference in how you call a defense. It makes a difference in how you can call an offense. stats have historically shown one to be probable of a drive ending in points and one with no points. a good punt can give your defense a chance to make a difference. It can give your offense a chance to get better field position and start again. Between some of those early penalties and the punting, it had a big impact on the overall game. we don't have a completely dominating offense or defense. We have a good offense and good defense. You can win with that. You can win a super bowl with that. But you have to play well every play. When you don't have a special teams unit that can spark anything, you have to make the most of every opportunity. It's like our WR corps. They aren't great, they could be better with just what we have. But they aren't consistent enough. Allison "could" be just fine as a WR. But he seems to drop one or 2 every game he should have. They may not seem like a lot, but when you're not great and can make up for a less than average play with a great play down the road you need to be consistent. Dropping a ball for a 1st down on 3rd is a drive killer obviously. it something this team can't do. Just like the rest of the special teams unit is not great, you can't be punting the ball 30 yards on a change of possession. That's crap. you have to be better. and consistently so.
