Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn dressed in a light orange shirt for his visit to the Browns. If he gets his wish, he'll soon have a matching orange helmet. Quinn, who grew up in Dublin, Ohio, has said he wants to play for the Browns, the team he rooted for as a kid. -- Akron Beacon-Journal The Browns are apparently ready to step up their pursuit of Chiefs quarterback Trent Green. Browns GM Phil Savage said Thursday morning that the next step is to negotiate a "ballpark contract" for Green that would prompt him to want to come to Cleveland for a visit. So far, Green has said he only wants to be traded to the Dolphins, who are also in the hunt. -- Cleveland Plain Dealer The Panthers obviously don't view David Carr as the typical backup. Coach John Fox has said several times that Jake Delhomme, who struggled at times last season, remains the starter. But Carr could provide a viable alternative if Delhomme struggles again. -- Charlotte Observer Although they appear set at cornerback, the Redskins are expected to call New England about Asante Samuel, who expressed disappointment about not getting a long-term contract and would be open to a trade. -- Washington Times The day after his client made comments that he wasn't happy with the way contract negotiations were progressing, Jay Bianco said a deal was "not imminent" between cornerback Asante Samuel and the Patriots. -- Providence Journal Way more than usual, Champ Bailey heard from friends and teammates the past month. They wanted to know if he was upset about the new contract cornerback Nate Clements received from the 49ers. Will Bailey be asking the Broncos for a new contract? "I'm not that type of guy," Bailey said. -- Denver Post Former University of Miami linebacker Jon Beason, who is expected to be a first-round selection in the NFL Draft later this month, went through a workout for seven teams, including the Dolphins, on Thursday morning. Beason ran the 40-yard dash in the low 4.6-second range, with scouts placing his best time around 4.62 and 4.63 seconds. -- Miami Herald Many critics considered free safety an Achilles heel for the Titans last season. But the Titans are unlikely to do much more at the position in free agency or the draft. That means four candidates incumbent Lamont Thompson, youngsters Calvin Lowry and Vincent Fuller as well as newcomer Bryan Scott will battle to see who plays alongside Chris Hope. -- The Tennessean Linebacker Nick Barnett has been a regular at the Packers' off-season conditioning program, choosing to take a different route than cornerback Mike McKenzie and receiver Javon Walker did when money became an issue with the Packers. He figures not preparing for the upcoming season will hurt him regardless if he has a new contract when the season begins. -- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
