The Green Bay Packers and free agent center Scott Wells are about $3 million apart on average annual salary, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The Packers are prepared to look elsewhere at the center postiion, namely Houston Texans free agent center Chris Myers.
The Packers are said to be offering Wells between $4-$5 million per season in a long-term contract but the 31-year old Pro Bowler is looking for $7.5 million per, which is inline with what the top highest paid centers in the NFL make.
Myers' agent, Drew Rosenhaus allegedly met with Packers officials or at the very least spoke with them at the NFL combine last week concerning the free agent center. That would technically be against league policy, but apparently happens irregardless of the rules.
Many people regard Myers as a superior player to Wells, including one AFC personnel director who was asked to rank the available centers from 1-10 and gave Myers and 8 and Wells a 7.
Talks with Wells' agent have gone no where according to the report.
"We'll figure that out," coach Mike McCarthy said Friday via the Associated Press. "I'm hopeful and confident things can work out with Scott. If they don't, we'll have to move in a different direction."
It's possible the Packers' franchise tag could be applied to Wells if Myers is not an option either, as the Texans don't have plans to let him walk. Texans coach Gary Kubiak called Myers the leader of his offensive line and he calls plays for the line as well.
Free-agency begins March 13.
