Hey there,

as I promised in the Lions game thread, this is my introduction to all the cheeseheads and guest fans here :)

First of all - yeah, I know, I am able to communicate in english, nevertheless there might be some mistakes and bad wordings in my postings so have some patience while reading my posts and if there is something incomprehensible - please ask before getting upset ;)

So well, I am a 50 year old guy from Germany, watching NFL and especially Packers for well over 20 years now. As so many Germans I was discouraged to watch football before because of the complex ruleset and the huge amount of time that some football matches consume. But to be honest - in the meantime I really started to enjoy especially these things as great aspects of this fascinating sport. That fascination grew more and more so that I started playing football by myself - but of course I chose flag football as I am really sure I would break in two when trying to play tackle :D

The key for me to start watching football was of course someone to introduce me to the game. You can read many rulebooks and many articles about football, but of course nothing is as great as watching a game on TV and having someone to explain all the things that happen there on the field. Yeah and as you might imagine - this guy to explain all this stuff to me was and still is a cheesehead, we are still watching Packers games together from time to time.

The weird thing is - as soon as you start getting deeper into this game and start talking about football with other guys, all of a sudden so many people pop up and start unmasking as football fans. One of my oldest friends is into the Seahawks, another one spent a lot of time in Philadelphia and goes with the Eagles and of course especially during the last years you meet a huge amount of Chiefs fans. That is how things go - having success creates a lot of "fans". But I will refer again on that point in the "what made you a Packers fan" section of this board.

What else can I say to introduce me? Well - you won't be surprised, that for over 20 years now I would love to see a Packers game a Lambeau Field live and spend some time with the great cheesehead community. I have never seen a tailgating party - what is a huge difference for example to german soccer matches. No one would ever start any kind of party on the parking grounds here in Germany besides having a beer or two. I would love to spent some time before a game, checking out all the barbecues, beers and games that all these crazy guys roll out there. Must be fantastic. In Germany of course you know all the pubs in the area of the stadium, go there and meet friends and people, but I think thats not the same as a "real" tailgating party :D

If I should ever make it to Green Bay, I will write down a request here to meet some people over there to get some professional introduction to Green Bay and the Packers ;)

Well folks, that should do it for today as it is in the middle of the night here in Germany. Got to work tomorrow. Will write some more stuff as mentioned in the "what made you a packers fan" section the next days.

Welcome to the forum. I would love to visit Germany someday. My Great-great-grandparents moved to the US in the late 1840's. I wish I spoke German mainly because I'd like to have known exactly what my parents were saying about us kids at the dinner table as we were growing up.

It was this way for me growing up, except the language being spoken was Finnish. Conversation would start in English, and then on a dime, it would switch to Finn, and then tons of laughter... obviously it wasn't PG rated, and something they didn't want us kids to hear.

Nice introduction. Welcome to the boards! We're always more than happy to welcome our friends from abroad. I, for one, have spent some time in Europe, on vacations. Not tours, but trying to fit in, and be a part of the community when there. I've watched Packer games on TV in sports bars in the UK, and Spain, and have to say, the Packer fans I've met in both of them are amazingly knowledgeable, considering their limited exposure to the game.

I have friends, in the UK, who I've attended games with in Green Bay. They've made it a point to take vacations to stay in Green Bay for two games on consecutive Sundays if possible.

Watching the crowds that have filled stadiums in Germany, cheering as loud, maybe louder, than most fans do here in the US, was amazing. Great fans.

Rest assured, when you do finally get to Green Bay for a game, this site is the perfect place to arrange for meeting fans that you can hang out with while there. It's an amazing atmosphere, and I think you're going to like the bratwurst, American style as well. The food is amazing with our tailgate parties. I have friends, believe it or not, who have been tailgating at Packer games for 70 years! It never gets old.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for your reactions and sorry for my late response... somehow I didn't follow up this thread here. Nevertheless, the idea is still alive to come to Green Bay one day. Probably not this season, but at the moment I am looking forward to make some plans for one of the upcoming seasons. We will see.

Of course - if anyone of you plans to travel to Germany, just drop me a note and I will try to help and answer as many questions as possible. I can give some good advice for travelling through Germany and Europe :)

But for now, I am looking forward to the new season and will watch as much Packers games as I can here in Germany.

That sounds great. I have it on my bucket list for sure :)

Ps.: I forgot to mention - I read so often, how the Packers fans support their team and how the whole city is bound to the Packers. That is one of the reasons I started watching Packers games. You know, in Germany, many soccer clubs are "real clubs" with many members, so there is not only one single owner but it is a club of many thousand members. As far as I know, the Packers are the only team left in the NFL that is in a similar structure and has several thousand owners. That was what attracted me several years ago with the Packers. I am originally from Gelsenkirchen in Germany, so perhaps someone here has heard of "Schalke 04" - that is my home club in Gelsenkirchen and one of the biggest clubs in Europe and the world (6th biggest club in the world with 194.000 members). That means, that my hometown is incredibly connected with "our" soccer club and I believe that there is the same feeling and athmosphere in Green Bay when the whole city just walks into the stadium and supports the Pack. In Gelsenkirchen they say: "once you just turn on the lights in the Schalke stadium, a little bit later the stadium is packed with people" :D
