Message: <blockquote data-quote="HardRightEdge" data-source="post: 606479"><a href="http://www.rotowire.com/football/player.htm?id=8892" target="_blank">http://www.rotowire.com/football/player.htm?id=8892</a>Right.  According to rotowire.com, Hyde took 704 defensive snaps last season.  There were very few (if any?) nickel and dime snaps he did not take.  Unless he happens to win the open cover corner spot, which is unlikely, I don't see how he could increase his defensive snaps.He also took 192 special teams snaps.  Throwing in some reasonable number of punts kicked OB or in the end zone where Hyde was the returner, less than 20% of his special teams duty was returning punts.  If snap count was a concern, which it should not be, then taking him off of some kick coverage duty and letting him return punts would be the best use of the asset.And if injury was a concern, then Cobb would not have been back returning punts more often than Hyde.McCarthy wanting more starters on special teams...Hyde would certainly qualify as one of the "nickel starters" which in this defense are the starters, though I doubt that's a factor in choosing the punt returner.  One would suppose McCarthy had the line play during those 7 kick blocks foremost in his mind when thinking about starters on ST.I consider it unconscionable that Hyde, ridiculously productive and simply a natural as a punt returner, would not be penned into the spot.</blockquote>
