Look, there are a lot of issues at play when it comes to scouting players. You can never know for sure if a player will suceed or not because of a couple of things. Dedication. Many of these kids struggle in life. They grow up in modest surroundings. Suddenly they are given millions and they now have opportunities they have always dreamed about. Do they still work out as hard when they can now also go jet skiing with a hot babe? There are 12 WRs who are drafted each year who are faster, stronger, more athletic than Jerry Rice. But none of them come close to how hard he worked. Coaching: every coach has a style - is your staff going to bring it out of him? How can you predict that? At one time the Packers had 15 HOF/all pros on their roster and had the worst record in the NFL. Lombardi was hired and they immediately played better. He was a master motivator. Treating each player differently to bring the most out of him. Physical Abuse. The NFL is a step up in the toll it takes on your body. A player who was healthy in college suddenly has issues, even if minor, have an effect. Complexity. The difference between college and pro football is huge. A player who can memorize 16 route patterns is now asked to know 40 and they change at the LOS based on 5 different coverage scenarios and 3 different blitz scenarios - preseason- and 3 different coverages post snap. And you better be timing that route with the other crossing WR . . . The difference between a great player and an average is not as much as people think. Any of these issues can have a significant effect on a players performance. So there are no sure things when it comes to evaluating a prospect.
