It will be a competitive camp this year. I would not expect Simmons to be a lock to be on the final 53, but he certainly has a good shot.

So Jon Eric Sullivan said “we want to be big across the front, we want to be more physical”. Simmons is another example of that effort. He lost his way after being drafted at #9 overall, but make no mistake, he’s a physical specimen. He does lack some natural instincts near the LOS, but he needs a defined role to set his abilities into motion.

There are going to be several teams with DC’s or Secondary Staff that can utilize him properly. This is right up Jeff Hafley’s Alley.

It would be nice if Simmons came to the realization that his future hinges on where he takes his game this year. For some players it takes the reality that the dream is over to make them understand what they need to do to stick around. If he realizes just 50% of the potential they saw in him when drafted, he'd be a great asset to the Packers.

Being able to disguise defenses right up until the snap can be a real asset for a defense. Let's hope Simmons sees the light and can make it work for him and the Packers.

Simmons will at the very least be a great upgrade to the special teams units that need all the help they can get. While he's an athletic freak, he turned out to be a tweener. Not quite a safety and not quite a LB. Perhaps, he'll fill in for Quay Walker on obvious passing downs but Walker isn't a liability against the pass.

Who knows. I'm still thinking that Hopper will be a player.

I'd assume he's a depth piece/camp body and if he makes the 53, he'll be a game planning device. IE, some weeks he might not get any snaps from scrimmage, some weeks he'll play 25-35% of the snaps.

Here is how I look at the Simmons signing. It's a one year deal, although I haven't seen the terms, I am guessing its low money, with low guarantees. If that is the case, the upsides of the signing far outweigh any downsides. I also think that Simmons ceiling is higher than what was seen with the Cardinals and Giants.

First Golden changes from #81 to #22 ( for a WR that just looks odd), now Simmons who I consider a LB, more than a Safety, is picking #28... and he was #19 with the Giants. No wonder he has struggled to hold down a job, he has bad juju with picking #'s, lol.

And if it doesn't work out you don't lose a lot by cutting him.

Good question. I think the $$ needs to be in line with he’s a ST leader. He might not he an upgrade over McDuffie, but I’m comfortable having him step in rotation if someone misses time.

I believe one of two extremes occur at this stage in Simmons' career....

This season he showcases the ability to be the player most of the league thought they saw when he was a college prospect - and plays into a solid to big contract in the offseason.

OR

He continues to underachieve and literally be facing next year no one really picking up the phone for him...and at best has to take another one year gamble deal...

I see no middle ground.

I understand what the middle ground would be, I personally given his history laid out for years has me not expected that to occur - he's going to either continue to underachieve or finally put it together is all I was saying as an expectation.
