As I watch the Giannis fiasco unfolding, and the Bucks throwing out ultimatums to him as if they had a leg to stand on, I wonder what comes next since the Bucks are saying that there needs to be a resolve within the next 10 days, or he's going to be traded. Giannis seems to be making it clear that he'll only accept a trade if it's to a team he wants to play for, thereby putting the Bucks in a bad position because he doesn't seem to be inclined to sign the super-max contract and will play out next season and leave the Bucks as a free agent after the season is over. In other words, his value keeps going down every day that passes, and the teams he wants to go to seems to be those who would end up giving the Bucks nothing but a couple of first round picks that would be from about #25 or so on down. Not exactly franchise player picks in any draft. In today's game, having two picks in the 25-30 range won't get you a trade into the top 10 because the talent level drops off very quickly as you move down the list. Of course, I realize there are some exceptions where players do end up being a star at that level in the draft. I have a hunch the Bucks are going to end up taking 2 or 3 mid-range players and a pair of 1st round picks which won't make up for anything we lose in Giannis, and the wasted trades in the past. It's going to make the Bucks a lower 1/3 team for several years. The Spurs used picks like Devon Vassel as the 11th pick, Stephon Castle a 4th pick, and of course Wemby as a #1. That's a team that knows how to rebuild through the draft, not throw in the towel and sit at the bottom. They traded away Murray & White to gain that draft capital which was wise. The Bucks have failed to put themselves in that position and it's going to cost them dearly. There will be a lot of new faces this year and a team that is going to struggle because it's not going to have the horsepower to compete with the big guys. It's back to bottom feeder basketball for the Bucks. It's not going to be pretty.
