House's snap counts in 3 games were 0, 24 and 6. It could be argued that he was supposed compete with the rookies for #3 perimeter corner behind Williams and King, or that he would have been had he not been banged up from the start. The fact of the matter is he wasn't. House had a lot of bad looks for having been on the field a mere 30 snaps so far this season, for whatever reason. He was being targetted as a weak link. Once the decision was made to put House on IR and with King's issues, the roster was down to 3 CBs. 5 CBs was light to begin with. You can't suit up on Sunday with just 3. You can't play 4 corner dime with 3 and if there's an injury during a game with just 3 you're totally screwed. In week 1 with King on the field, the corner aggregate snap count was 336% That means Pettine was playing dime at least 36% of the time against Chicago, more with a smattering of base snaps though I can't recall if they played any base at all. Without King, the corner snap count dropped to 293% against the more potent Minnesota passing game. Against Washington, a more balanced offense than Chicago, it dropped to 260% with King out and House limited to 6 snaps. This data suggests Pettine preference to play a high dime %, hamstrung by the injuries. Further, except for King and to some degree Williams, the perimeter/slot distinction is artificial. Williams, Alexander and Jackson have played both slot and perimeter. Pettine plays the matchup game. A particular Breeland attraction, beside the need for a veteran 4th. corner to step in and play a fair share of snaps, whether inside or outside, would be that he started out as a slot corner and then got that nice Carolina contract on the strength of perimeter play. Matchup flexibility would have been a factor, and then more of factor to cover the eventuality of yet another injury among the other 3 who can play currently. We have not even gotten to Detroit (twice), the Rams, New England or Atlanta, teams that throw the ball well and a lot. Whether Breeland is a low or high risk proposition, shrewd or a big gamble, hinges on the contract details. If the contract is healthy, that would tell us something about the level of desperation or the King prognosis or both. As contracts go, this illustrates why you don't drive the cap space anywhere near zero. House still gets paid on IR; Breeland subtracts from the cap space. The way things are going, a vet O-Lineman for the right side might be in our future. Whether slot or perimenter, nickel or dime, #3 or #4, he's going to get his fair share of snaps and needs to get up to speed in a hurry.
