Admittedly, I don't know enough about Dee Ford to know whether he is a top 5 EDGE guy or not, but for the sake of argument, let's say that he is. I will rely on the Packers to decide that. Depending on what he wants for a new deal, a second round pick really isn't that bad of a deal for the guy. If you look at the recent history of players the Packers have landed with their 2nd round picks, doesn't seem like you are giving much up. So besides Davante Adams, Randall Cobb and Eddie Lacy, these are the players we have drafted in the 2nd round in the last 10 drafts. Adams would be about the only guy I would say was a 100% hit.

Josh Jackson
Kevin King
Josh Jones
Jason Spriggs
Quinten Rollins
Jarel Worthy
Casey Hayward
Michael Neal
Then there is the salary cost. First, a second rounder is going to cost the Packers around $1.6M/year. Signing a top 20 FA EDGE guy might cost the Packers less than Ford, but is still going to be in the $12-15M+ range. If the Packers didn't have 2 first round picks, I would be a bit more hesitant. However, if Ford is as good as some are claiming, depending on what kind of money he is asking for, giving up that #45 pick wouldn't bother me. Again, I don't know a lot about Ford and initially my gut says he isn't worth top 5 money, but if he is.......
