I am the same way, I don't believe you go all in on one season at the expense of the next seasons. However, making a smart trade, with an eye on this season and next, wouldn't be considered a bad move in my book. I think where we differ is the "value of a draft pick" vs "Value of a trade target". The Fuller trade made no sense to me because of his contract, not because of what they were asking. Of course had they been asking for a 7th rounder, it would have been a no brainer to make the trade. But a 2nd for a guy that might be out the door in March or very expensive to retain, no thanks on a 2nd. But if I could trade a 2nd for a pretty decent WR that has proven himself in the NFL , have a longer term contract then 6-8 games and the great need that I think the Packers have, sign me up. After all, besides the salary, all I would be giving up, is a future player that I have no clue on how good they will actually be in the NFL. I agree with you that if you just view Fuller as a short term rental and a desperation move to try and win a SB now, it would have been a terrible trade for a 2nd, for the Packers. However, I don't think you can view all trades as terrible, just because you don't win a SB that year as a result or that you have to spend a draft pick that could have been a great player or a dud to do it. Which is what you seemed to be implying, perhaps I read your post wrong. I think we also agree on the big picture. I would rather watch the Packers have 10 straight competitive winning seasons and no super bowl wins, then 1 super bowl win and 9 Detroit Lion type seasons. I would love a SB win, but its just one game. Give me 16+ fun and competitive games each season, winnings seasons and I am a happy fan.
