After watching the Bucks game against the Houston Rockets a couple of nights ago, I came away with some interesting observations. These are things you don't see on TV. First of all, the Bucks play way too much isolation basketball. Giannis is the man involved a huge percentage of the time. Even though his make percentage is high, it takes others out of the offensive flow of the game. When he isn't playing that game, Dame is taking control and shooting a huge percentage of the shots taken with Giannis on the bench. That too can be detrimental. Doc Rivers is not an effective coach. When you're sitting close to the team and he's giving instructions, I saw assistant coaches and guys on the bench looking at each other and rolling their eyes. It's the same comments about givens that the players already know and quite honestly nothing that addresses specifics and gives advice on how to correct the problem. To me, good coaches will tell players what they did wrong then offer guidance on what to do to correct the problem. As an example, the Bucks were burned twice in a row unable to get back on defense fast enough leading to two easy buckets for the Rockets. In the time-out, Rivers said; "You got to get back faster! You gotta be there!" Not once did he address specifically who should have been retreating to play defense, but it was clear that it was Lillard who failed to retreat both times. Rivers didn't have the guts to address him directly. He put it on the team. I also noticed that Rivers doesn't like to hear much from his assistants. He pretty much ignores what they say, and doesn't use their advice in team huddles. He often goes in a completely different direction on his statements. I saw a lot of problems and quite honestly, this team is not going to go far in the playoffs without some major changes on the sidelines.
