That means “they don’t get too big and aren’t good for market,” Ryan’s mom said. <strong> But Ryan fed Reggie a steady diet of natural grains, and Reggie got big, just like his namesake. Ryan took Reggie on walks in the neighborhood, with the pavement wearing down Reggie’s hooves enough that they didn’t need to be manicured. They became such a familiar sight that even the local Michigan State Police officer stopped to pet Reggie.</strong> That exposure to a variety of situations helped Reggie in the show ring. He earned a blue ribbon, or first place, at last month’s Ontonagon County Fair. It was tough for Ryan to let go of his first 4-H market project, but Reggie was sold at the county 4-H youth livestock auction for $2,580.
