By GREG A. BEDARD gbedard@journalsentinel.com Posted: March 18, 2008 Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers continued to plod along in their search for a backup to starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers by having veteran Gus Frerotte in for a visit Tuesday, according to his agent, Marvin Demoff. Gus Frerotte spent the previous two season with the St. Louis Rams after starting 15 of 16 games for the Miami Dolphins in 2005. Frerotte, 36, is the second passer to meet with the Packers since a spot was opened by Brett Favre's retirement. Quinn Gray, formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars, met with the Packers last week. Frerotte spent the previous two season with the St. Louis Rams after starting 15 of 16 games for the Miami Dolphins in 2005. He was cut by the Rams on Feb. 28, just before he was due a $500,000 roster bonus. Frerotte still has a strong arm and a quick mind although he infamously sprained his neck when he head-butted a wall during a 1997 game with the Washington Redskins. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1996. Frerotte played most of four games (three starts) in place of the injured Marc Bulger last season with the Rams. He completed 94 of 167 passes (56.3%) for 1,014 yards and seven touchdowns. Frerotte also threw 12 interceptions to post a passer rating of 56.3 for a Rams team that was decimated by injuries on offense. His worst performance came in an Oct. 14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in which Frerotte completed 19 of 38 passes for 208 yards and five interceptions. He also was sacked four times. Frerotte's final start was a 28-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Dec. 2. Despite playing the second half with an injured throwing shoulder, Frerotte was 23 for 35 for 311 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He missed the next two games with the injury. Frerotte rallied Miami to a six-game winning streak to finish the 2005 season at 9-7. He completed 52% of his passes, threw 18 touchdowns against 13 interceptions and posted a passer rating of 71.9. Frerotte's next team would be his eighth since coming into the league in 1994. He is scheduled to visit the Minnesota Vikings today. Decision near: The agent for St. Louis linebacker Brandon Chillar said his client was nearing a decision on which team he would join. Chillar, an unrestricted free agent, is considering the Packers, Rams and Arizona Cardinals. He visited the Cardinals on March 4 and the Packers on March 5, but has been in a holding pattern since then. The Cardinals are thought to be the front-runner but they have yet to clear up a salary cap issue that would allow them to finalize a deal with Chillar, and it's possible the four-year pro has grown tired of waiting. The Packers agreed to terms with linebacker Tracy White, their top backup last year, and recently initiated discussions with strong-side linebacker Brady Poppinga, so they probably aren't bidding too high. Chillar would create competition at the position and make it less of a slam dunk that Poppinga would start again next year.
