That's a source of considerable relief for Packers. "Brandon went through the whole thing," coach Mike McCarthy said after practice Sunday. "He looked to be fine." If Morency doesn't play this week, then seventh-round pick DeShawn Wynn probably will be the backup even though he missed all but the final preseason game because of a thigh injury, and Ryan Grant, acquired in a trade only Saturday, will be the No. 3 back. Morency appears to have an OK chance of playing this week, or at least being cleared medically to play. For the first time since straining his patellar tendon in the first practice of training camp July 28, Morency on Sunday took part in some drills in practice, though he did no 11-on-11 work. The issue with him might not be whether he's cleared to play Sunday, but whether he's in good enough football shape to contribute after missing all of camp and having only one week of practice for preparation. Going into training camp, the Packers were planning him and Jackson to split the large majority of snaps at halfback this season, but Morency probably will have to be brought along slowly early in the season.

The trade for Grant showed how desperate the Packers were for a healthy running back, and that they coveted Grant more than other backs they might have been able to pick up on waivers or sign as a street free agent. The best free agent available was 32-year-old Corey Dillon, whom they showed no interest in. Perhaps the most noteworthy prospect cut Saturday was Antonio Pittman, the former Ohio State halfback and fourth-round pick of New Orleans this year. The Packers were not one of the two teams that put a claim in on Pittman — St. Louis, which got him, and Cincinnati were. An NFL source said General Manager Ted Thompson traded a sixth-round pick for Grant and the deal contained no conditions, so the Giants keep the pick regardless of whether Grant plays a down for the Packers. Thompson covets draft picks as much as any GM in the NFL, so the deal means he had little intention of claiming Pittman or any other halfback off waivers. Grant brings some size to the position — he's 6-foot-1 and 218 pounds — but has never played in an NFL regular-season game. As an undrafted rookie, he spent 2005 on the Giants' practice squad, and then he missed all of last season on the non-football injury list after severing a tendon in his forearm in the offseason. Grant made the Giants' roster as the final halfback and was playing on the first team of all four special teams before New York traded him Saturday.
