It's the JS online report about Walt Williams, etc..... ====================================== Another runner down RB Williams on injured reserve By BOB McGINN bmcginn@journalsentinel.com Posted: Nov. 11, 2005 Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers placed one player on injured reserve Friday and probably have considered doing the same thing with another. Running back Walter Williams, who would have played on third downs Sunday in Atlanta, went on injured reserve after suffering a severe hamstring injury Thursday during the early part of practice. That reduced the roster to 52. Defensive tackle Corey Williams has been told by the medical staff that he would miss three to four more weeks with a torn right calf muscle suffered Sunday against Pittsburgh. Although Corey Williams will become the first of the Packers' nine defensive linemen to miss any time because of injury, serious injury has become routine for running backs in Green Bay this season. On Aug. 1, free agent Chris Robertson suffered a broken kneecap. On Aug. 4, free agent Chaz Williams suffered a broken ankle. On Oct. 9, Najeh Davenport suffered a broken ankle. On Oct. 23, Ahman Green suffered a blown quadriceps tendon. Tony Fisher, who was downgraded to out Friday, won't play until doctors determine that his damaged rib isn't going to puncture one of his lungs. Walter Williams played 21 snaps Sunday against Pittsburgh after being re-signed Oct. 25 to replace Green. Williams also lasted only one game in 2004 before going on injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain. Without Williams, the Packers are scrambling. Samkon Gado, who first joined the team Oct. 17 on the practice squad, will start and play on early downs, but it's now expected that ReShard Lee will handle third downs. Lee has played merely 18 snaps from scrimmage since being signed Oct. 6. "Third down is a tough down," offensive coordinator Tom Rossley said. "That's when it gets exotic with blitzes. But both those backs are very bright. We'll get them to do the right thing." The Packers are so hard up that they gave aging fullback William Henderson a few snaps Friday as the third-down back. "It can be pretty hectic, especially when they're making protection calls and he is changing his (the back's) responsibilities," quarterback Craig Nall said, referring to Brett Favre. "It's not something you can pick up in a week or two." Corey Williams, who ranked fifth among defensive linemen with 44% playing time, knew he had a problem when he felt something pop in the third quarter. The injury won't require surgery. "The muscle knotted up on the side," he said. "I knew then that I had torn it on the outside. The doc says three to four weeks, but it's a day-to-day thing." Sheer guts: Although center Mike Flanagan declined comment Friday, offensive line coach Larry Beightol confirmed that Flanagan played in intense pain against the Steelers stemming from sports hernia surgery Oct. 5. "Oh God, he was hurting," Beightol said. "I'll be honest with you. I really don't know how he's doing it." Flanagan practiced all week and will be back in the lineup. His play deteriorated in the second half, and several times he appeared to be writhing in pain on the ground before getting up. "I don't know if the painkillers hold in there at all," Beightol said. "It really says a lot about this guy that he is trying to gut through this. What happens is other parts start to shut down. He's trying to help the team. Really, the first half he played very well." Changing of the guard: One reason why the Packers decided to start Scott Wells and not Grey Ruegamer at left guard ahead of Adrian Klemm is their concern over Flanagan’s continuing availability. Ruegamer is regarded as more dependable than Wells making the shotgun snap. “Coach feels better if we’re going to use the shotgun that he’s gonna get the ball where it needs to be,â€
