but somewhere along the line, the claim was made by other posters that it would be "easier" to get to the playoffs via winning the division than via wild card.


That would only be true in a slack division like when the Packers won their division at 8-7-1. A record that most times won't qualify for a wildcard. Sometimes you have a slack conference where 9-7 might get a wildcard spot.
