As a runner, Franklin is reminiscent of the 3rd. down backs who came before him...Brandon Jackson (inexplicably elevated to starter) and Alex Green...none of these guys could/can get yards after contact. The Franklin/Brandon Jackson comparison is most apt. They're about the same size, they're best times were around 4.4 (Franklin 4.38 at the Combine, Jackson 4.41 at his Pro Day), Jackson's Combine/Pro Day metrics indicate he was a bit more athletic, and they're running styles are similar. Jackson would rip off a long gainer about once every 100 touches pumping up his career average to a substandard 3.9 per carry. In between he was not a credible runner. Take out Franklin's 51 yarder, and he's at 18 carries for 56 yds. for a 3.1 average. Jackson was a decent blocker; at least when he was in on third down the D wouldn't know if he was there to block or release. Franklin is not a good blocker; accounting for him in the secondary on 3rd. down won't likely go to waste. McCarthy doesn't comment much on running back skills, but when he does his complimentary comments are generally limited to "the guy has some fall-forward" or the "he's a good blocker". Franklin doesn't qualify as either. Not to mention the backs who have had success in MM's offense are between-the-tackle runners going back to Ahman Green. I couldn't reckon why MM wouldn't motion Green to the slot given he was a good space player. If not then, I have hard time seeing him do it now with Franklin. It just doesn't seem to fit his eye / scheme. The best we can say about Franklin is that he's a rookie, so some development / light-bulb-going-on affects might be evident as we go along. But he's just not ready for prime time or a guy you can build a feature play around. I expect he'll see some snaps as we go along this year, particularly if there's a good match-up, say against a slow or dinged up LB, but not much more than that.
