The Packers are pretty much guaranteed to have a down year or 2 after Rodgers leaves whether that is next year or 3 years down the road. If they choose to backload the crap out of the cap for those years it can literally all be caught up in the year after he leaves. Yes they will have a crappy team that year while they cut everyone and begin to rebuild…. so what. The alternative is that they start that rebuild now. instead and suck right away. I know you are all excited about draft picks for Rodgers etc…. but the history of the NFL tells me that having a HOF 4 time MVP QB trumps the uncertainty of the draft in almost every case. I truly don’t understand why so many people are stressing over doing Russ Ball’s job. he will make the cap work however he has to if they decide to go all in once again.
I really think you need to stop thinking about the salary cap like it’s an individual‘s personsal finances. The cap is just a limit imposed to attempt to allow all teams to be competitive. In most normal cases I would agree that it would certainly be best to try to stay within the limits of the cap each year leaving room to make the necessary roster changes that inevitably come up from year to year. However this is not a normal situation. The Packers currently have a 4 time MVP QB that happens to have won two of them in the past 2 years. He is coming up on the end of his career, but is still playing like the best QB in the league. You keep referring to “cap hell” like it’s analogous to personal bankruptcy or something. It isn’t.
