You mean to say he got caught in the middle of a ....rear ending?
Mmmmm.... not really.... it was, mm, let's see.... a wholesome film about the reward some women find in forming close friendships with other women. Very close friendships.
You know, in the 20 years since this happened, every time I think of it I especially marvel not at the stupidity of what he did in the first place, but at the
incredible idiocy of telling the truth!! Dude; I don't care how drunk you were.... you seriously couldn't think of a better story than
that??
You should have been able to think of a
hundred better stories than that. I mean, if nothing else, just stop at "I was drunk and lost control of my car". Leave it right there and scurry away; nobody would ever know the difference. What the hell was he thinking?
=====================
It reminds me of a high school kid who got mauled by a deer while hunting, back when I was a teenager. I'm pretty sure it was in Wisconsin, but don't remember exactly where. Mid- to late 70s, in case it rings a bell for someone.
He was in a tree stand in an oak tree, and a sizable buck strolled up and started grazing on acorns underneath him. He was trying to figure out the best way to get a good shot at him without making a noise and spooking him, when he suddenly had a brainstorm... everyone always talks about "one shot, one buck" - what if he could take his buck without firing a shot? "One buck, no shots"? Tarzan did it all the time, why not him?
As I remember hearing it on the radio, he verrry quietly laid his rifle down, slowly stood up and drew his knife, and positioned himself to drop down on the buck's back and stab it in the throat. Had it all worked out in his head. Moved slowly and silently to the edge of the platform, and waited for the buck to move underneath his spot.
Apparently it was all going very well until the instant he jumped - stepping off the platform in and of itself made a small amount of noise, just enough to make the buck jump to the side as he dropped on it. They're an incredibly wary animal.
Instead of landing on his back (which probably would not have turned out as well as he expected, even if he did manage to stick the landing), he glanced off the side of the deer, and landed face down on the ground from almost 10 feet up. He was stunned by the impact, and while he lay there on the ground, the enraged buck (who was berserk about some predator having just jumped on top of him from a tree) just savaged him.
As I remember, there was a ruptured spleen, broken ribs, broken pelvis, a serious knee injury, and deep lacerations on his rib cage front and back from the antlers he had briefly imagined would soon hang on his wall. I'm sure there were probably more injuries than that, but that's the list that stands out in my memory. I kinda remember something about facial wounds, too.
And from the moment I heard that on the radio on my way to work that morning, the first question that entered my mind was why in the world the kid admitted all that. He must have been the laughing stock of his entire high school until the day he graduated. I'll bet it's still the Number One conversation topic at his class reunions.
Why not just "ah, well, I fell out of a tree, what can I say?" I promise you that's what I would have done.
