Got chatting Packers with a buddy the other day and his posed question to me was "Do you think our 53 man roster changes with whether Rodgers is back or not outside of the QB room?" It spurred a long discussion but got my mind swirling way too early at trying to place predictions down for the 53 man 2021 roster for Green Bay.

QBs (2/2) - Rodgers, Love *I think we keep three if Rodgers leaves, but only 2 if he does. Benkert/Dolegala both PS options. IF Rodgers leaves I think we go Love, Bortles, Benkert

RBs (4/6) - Jones, Dillon, Hill, Taylor

WRs (5/11) - Adams, MVS, Lazard, Funchess, Rodgers

TEs (4/15) - Lewis, Tonyan, Deguara, Daffney

OLs (9/24) - Bahk, Jenkins, Meyers, Patrick, Turner, Newman, Runyon, Braden, Nijman

DLs (5/29) - Clark, Lowry, Keke, Slaton, Lancaster

ILBs (4/33) - Barnes, Martin, Campbell, McDuffie

OLBs (5/38) - Z Smith, P Smith, Gary, Garvin, Kemp

CBs (6/44) - Jaire, Stokes, King, Sullivan, SJC, Samuels

Ss (5/49) - Amos, Savage, Scott, Uphoff, Redmond

Special (3/52) - Crosby, Scott, Fortunato

With Rodgers this left me with 52 when done and the numbers kept above per position are exactly what we did last season....I think these are the guys that might slip in possibly for the 53rd in this scenario:

-Ty Summers making us keep 5 ILBs
-Begelton or Winfree making it 6 WRs
-Hollman making it 7 CBs
-Bortles making it 3 QBs even with Rodgers

I love the Cole Van Lanen's story but it starts on PS I believe....for some reason I'm thinking Jackson and Hollman get pushed out by Samuels (I'm higher on him than most)...Cronk is also stashed on PS I believe...Stepniak might as well.

Lot could change and mold forward with Rodgers news, injuries and performances.

It looks reasonable though I am not going to pretend to know all of them. The one I hope does not make it is Redmond. I just don't trust him to be reliable.

Great breakdown tynimiller

VERY early 53 man roster is:

Offense(25)

QBs
(2) - Rodgers, Love

RBs (3) - Jones, Dillon, Hill
*I was not the biggest fan of Dexter Williams coming out of college. I thought he looked sloppy and looked overweight coming into rookie season. Looks much leaner now. Fumbles were his biggest issue as a rookie and it looks like it's still continuing. Wouldn't shock me if Patrick Taylor makes the team.

WRs (6) - Adams, Lazard, MVS, Funchess, Amar. Rodgers, Taylor
*Juwann Winfree has a chance to overtake Taylor. But a reminder is that Winfree has had off-the-field issues (it's in the past I get it..) and his career thus far has been riddled with injuries.

TEs (4) - Lewis, Tonyan, Deguara, Dafney

OLs (10) - Bahk, Jenkins, Meyers, Patrick, Turner, Newman, Runyon, Braden, Stepaniak, Van Lanen

Defense (28)

DLs
(5) - Clark, Lowry, Keke, Slaton, Lancaster

ILBs (5) - Barnes, Martin, Campbell, Summers, McDuffie
*The Burks experiment is over. Won't be shocked if they only kept 4 ILBs

OLBs (4) - Z Smith, P Smith, Gary, Garvin

CBs (6) - Jaire, Stokes, King, Sullivan, SJC, Jackson

Ss (5) - Amos, Savage, Scott, Uphoff, Redmond

Special (3) - Crosby, Scott, Fortunato

I Can't argue with a lot of the way too early roster picks. There will be some surprise cuts for sure. Always is. However, I really wish they would upgrade the DL.
DLs (5) - Clark, Lowry, Keke, Slaton, Lancaster
Lowry is average at best. Keke showed flashes, but was still inconsitant. Lancaster just stinks. He's got a great story and I applaud him for making the most of his talent. I've just seen him get physically manhandled too many times. Slaton is a rookie and one just never knows how much you can count on them if at all. Clark, that's it. He's the only trustable one. I hope we have a flyer in training camp that will be a surprise.

ME TOO... I'm not the biggest TJ Slaton fan, and he could prove me wrong but.. I wasn't too thrilled with the pick.

I'm okay with the Slaton pick out of the 5th round. Just can't trust any rookie and especially someone that is probably considered a bit of a project. He will have to learn in year one and that doesn't really help us next year.

Hollman over King at CB and yes I think Summers makes the team yet again, and possibly not as the #5 ILB. I think he could out play McDuffie and at least be #4, who knows maybe he outplays Campbell and becomes the primary back up. Either way I don't think he's the ST guy this year. Also props for NOT keeping Burks.

Also remember you need to keep an extra lineman as Bakh probably starts the season on PUP.

You're saying King doesn't make the team or that Hollman depth chart wise will be above?

Rick I think you have bounced off too many turnbuckles there buddy. King not only makes the team but he will be an opening day starter.

Aw Schultz you know NOTHING you saw NOTHING you weren't even HERE WHEN IT HAPPENED :)

Anyway I get that he was resigned as you and tynimiller pointed out, but I can't imagine someone who got toasted all day makes this team...and by that I mean I can't believe Gutey was so derelict in his duties that he couldn't find an upgrade, or see one on his own team when it shows up.

Man, King is getting way too much hate still. He wasnt good in that game but the Miller TD was not really on him imo. Dude can never ever guard Scotty Miller 1 v 1 with no saftey help in sight. King was thrown in front of the train there. And based on that, people see him way too critical imo.Not saying he had a good game. But the most critical thing was not really his fault imo. He is a slighty above average CB. Problem he gets targeted all day because no one bothers to try outplay Jaire.

King is guaranteed to be the day one starter opposite Jaire but will be taken over by Stokes, if everything goes well. Packers dont pay him 2M just to cut him before season, with an offseason and cap situation like this lmao

Agreed, this is a passing league. Not everyone is going to be an all star. King is solid and that's about it. That TD before the half was on Petine. No way man defense should have been called regardless of who was in at corner.

King played it poorly, but then he was screwed from the start. He plays off, they get a first down at the marker and kick a FG. Obviously preferred over the TD, but still not a good outcome.

You could argue that he should have played the play that way and just gave up the space and made them complete it underneath and concede the FG attempt, which nobody would have been happy with either.

What should have happened is you have your long rangy DB play up tighter so they have to work for the shorter pass and put someone over the top to cover the TD play. you don't put your slowest DB 1 on 1 with an entire side of the field to play with their fastest guy. You're not going to win.

Anyway, back to the topic. I tried my luck. I am also aware that Bortles and Dolegala
have been cut/waived but I wrote this before it made the news.

QB(3)

Rodgers, Love, Benkert

First two are a no-brainer and Benkert has shown some early promise and
was instantly a fan favourite. I can see him easily living the TBLS role.

Dolegala is a long shot and Bortles seems like a vet camp body. I know he
has the knowledge of the system and the experience but I take the potential
from Benkert over him.

RB(3)

Jones, Quadzilla, Hill

I dont think Dexter Williams will be around much longer. Hill and taylor
bring much more to the table. Taylor will land on the PS. It was a tough choice
between him and Hill.

WR(6)

Adams, MVS, Lazard, Rodgers, Funchess , Winfree

Its pretty self explainatory except Winfree. He has been nailing every
practice up until now.Should Randall Cobb somehow come in, Winfree
will land on the practice squad.

I know Rodgers likes EQ, so I doubt the Packers cut him lol, but I just dont
see it anymore, sadly.

OL(10)

DB, Jenkins, Turner,Patrick, Myers, Runyan, Turner, Newman, Stepaniak, Braden

Now this will be really interesting because versatility is key here and
basically everyone except DB is in play to compete at several positions
on the line.

And thats why Nijman,Hanson etc didnt make the cut. Van Lanen is a prime
candidate for the PS although I can see him making the roster from the
start.

TE(3)

Lewis, Tonyan, Deguara

Really good group imo. Sternberger has his suspension and outside of that
is pretty much questionable in nearly every way. He has tons of potential
but injuries are a concern in his career. Dafney is probably no.4 in this group but I had to cut him
because I had one guy too much on my list lol.

DL(5)

Clark, Keke, Slaton, Lowry, Lancaster

This group is pretty much safe to call. Packers dont have much on DL anyways
so it has to be them. I dont think we will see a big suprise here.

OLB(4)

Z.Smith, Gary, P.Smith, Garvin

The competition for the 4th spot will be really interesting to watch.
I gave Garvin the edge here because I still like what he brings to the table
and he could be a good addition to the roster. But Tipa and Ramsey are close imo.

ILB(4)

Campbell, Barnes, Martin, Summers

The Burks thing is done, nothing with him worked and Summers is a STs ace and
really important there. The rest is self explainatory. McDuffie can replace
Summers here but I see him at PS in his first season.

CB(7)

Jaire, King, Stokes, Sullivan, SJC, Stanford Samuels

Jackson is close but I really like Samuels and took him as a suprise for the
last spot at CB. Rest is pretty safe imo. Hollman and Ento havent shown
enough for me to be on the 53 roster.

S(5)

Amos, Savage, Scott, Black, Uphoff

I dont like Redmond so no way he makes it in my roster. Black has played
little but seems like a good depth guy. I like his play he showed and
has a few big plays on his tape already. Uphoff was said to be a big
candidate as an UDFA to make the roster. Dont know much about him but
everyone likes him and I like what I read so I take him as a depth guy.

Specialists(3)

Crosby, Scott, Bradley

While Bradley had isi struggles last season, Furtunato hasnt snapped in years.
So I take the experience here and hope he worked on his problems.

1.Some other scenarios: Packers only take 2 QBs to teh 53 roster and Benkert lands on PS, which
opens up the 4th TE spot for Dafney.
2.Redmond makes it over Henry Black, which seems likely due to experience, although I would hate it.
3. van Lanen makes the team over Braden. Everything is possible at the OL so its hard to predict the
group.
4. Cobb is now guaranteed to make the roster so switch him out for Winfree. The WR group looks pretty
good imo.

Edit: Sorry for the weird formate. I wrote it somewhere else and copied it. Not sure how to fix it without needing
to rewrite it.

He got toasted twice in that game for big gains and or TDs. Plus his shoulder issues keep him out of games. I stand by what I've said about him previously. If I'm wrong I'll admit it.

QB(2)

Rodgers, Love,

Looks like this is settled. Benkert will head to the practice squad. No sense in keeping three QB's on the active roster.

RB(5)

Jones, Dillon, Hill

Taylor is starting on the PUP list. Without training camp I'm guessing he is headed to the practice squad. Dexter Williams has had opportunities and just hasn't done much with them. Probably need some more depth here on the PS due to injuries. Hopefully Jones and Dillion can carry us through 17 games.

WR(11)

Adams, Cobb, MVS, Lazard, Rodgers, Funchess

Funchess is the question mark there. He hasn't played in two years and EQ has been in the offense for awhile. Rodgers can handle kick return duties as well, so I think Malik Taylor is out. I've heard good things about Winfree, but I think he is headed to the PS. Begelton is a flyer as well. I don't see it for him this season. He's had his opportunities.

OL(21)

Bakh, Jenkins, Turner, Patrick, Myers, Runyan, Newman, Stepaniak, Braden, Van Lanen

It's always so hard to say with injuries and growth of players from one season to the next. Van Lanen is a homer pick and I will admit that. Easily could be beaten out by Nijman or Hanson. There's a lot of talent here.

TE(25)

Lewis, Tonyan, Deguara, Sternberger

There's a lot of talent here as well. I think Sternberger figures it out after his suspension. Dafney is good story, but I don't see them keeping 5 TE's. Nauta and Kaufusi head to the practice squad. Deguara is on the PUP list, but in training camp they can come off of it at any time. If he remains on PUP I feel good about Dafney being there. Maybe they only keep 9 OL to make a spot for him.

DL(30)

Clark, Keke, Slaton, Lowry, Lancaster

I think this is pretty set. This is the weakest position on the Packers squad. Beyond Clark, there's no proven consistent players. Lancaster gets mauled on a lot of plays. Lowry is the definition of inconsistent. Slaton is a rookie and Keke needs to step it up. I would hope they would bring someone else into camp to compete. Previlon could not win a spot last year and Heflin is head to the PS.

OLB(34)

Smith Bros, Gary, Garvin

This one seems easy enough. Injuries might give Ramsey or Galeai a shot.

ILB(38)

Campbell, Barnes, Martin, Summers

Another position that is pretty set. Maybe Summers gets beat out, but I don't see it.

CB(45)

Jaire, King, Stokes, Sullivan, Jean-Charles, Ento, Samuels

Looks like Jaire, King, and Stokes as the starters. Jackson just can't figure it out. He gets cut this season. Hollman might be better than Ento and Samuels. It's hard to say in the reserve players.

S(50)

Amos, Savage, Redmond, Scott, Black

Both Scott and Black are great special teams players and good hybrid guys. Gaines doesn't have enough to get it done. Uphoff might beat someone out, but I think he is headed to the PS. There's some toss ups here with Redmond and Blaock on the "non-injury I'm not super high on this position. A lot of young guys with potential, but mostly not ready to play. Here's hoping Amos and Savage stay healthy all year.

Specialists(53)

Crosby, Scott, Bradley

Not much to say here. Maybe Fortunato beats out Bradley.

This is my new early stab at the 53 man rosters. We will see if it holds up after training camp. For me, the hardest to predict is OL, TE, and S.

As I have mentioned repeatedly King doesn't get targeted more often than Alexander.
I'm curious about this stat. I can't seem to find anything. Is there a site that tracks how many times a corner was targeted on the year?

Generally again only disagree with a couple things.
1.) WR: a.) I hope the depth chart does not shake out exactly that way, as I don't think Cobb is or ever has been a #2. b.) I think EQSTB makes it possibly over Funchess

2.) CB: Said it before gonna say it again, I can't keep King if I'm the GM or coaching staff don't care what the contract says. Big games he ain't makin' plays and he's injury prone.

3.) LB: a.) The rookie makes the team, not practice squad b.) I think one of either Campbell or Barnes doesn't make the team, I'm thinking Campbell. If both make the team then we keep 5 ILB.
