At the risk of starting a firestorm, I introduce the name Terrell Owens. His situation with the Eagles can be instructive. Owens became a huge distraction for the Eagles. He challenged the quarterback. He challenged management. He challenged the coach. He brought all sorts of media attention to the team. Eventually, the Eagles tired of the circus and just plain released him. No trade. An outright release. Owens signed with the Cowboys, a fierce divisional rival. Since joining the Cowboys, Owens has had two All-Pro seasons. Rest assured that the Eagles would do the same thing again, without hesitation. Favre is not Owens. Favre has irritated the Packers in different ways than Owens irritated the Eagles. But the point is that if the Packers do not want Favre around (and they should not if they want Aaron Rodgers to develop), they should get rid of him. Even if that means an outright release, or a trade for a low-round pick to anyone who wants him and for whom Favre is willing to play, including Minnesota. Even if a Favre-led team goes on to win the Super Bowl this year, who cares? Rodgers likely will take a year or two to develop. If Rodgers develops faster than expected, then he can lead the Packers to victory over the Vikings or anyone else quarterbacked by Favre. If he develops at a more normal pace, the Packers next Super Bowl window will likely be after Favre finally retires from his next team. I think the option of Favre returning to Green Bay is a dead one. I love the Packers and will root for Rodgers. But I am also a Favre fan, and a football fan. I would like to see Favre play somewhere because he is so fun to watch (the good and the bad). I would also like to see him extend his passing records to make them further out of reach for the likes of Peyton Manning. And a 4th round pick from Minnesota gives the Packers more than they would have if Favre just stayed retired.
