I guess where I’m at is that I don’t think it’s totally time to throw in the towel on Love yet (not a lot of benefit to that right now unless you think Clifford can be your guy) but IMO there are very few reasons to be optimistic at this point (and getting fewer). Going into this game Love was quite literally the least accurate passer in the whole league. He throws more “uncatchable” passes than anyone else in the league. His completion percentage above expected is dead last. I believe he has thrown the second most interceptions. And I am sure we will hear the usual excuses. “He is young, give him time” “Rodgers/Favre/etc didn’t light it up their first year!” “He hasn’t had Jones” “His WRs are young” “The OL is banged up” And so on. But more and more I just don’t think these hold a ton of water. It’s not like these are new issues; Love had huge question marks regarding his accuracy coming out of college and it appears that’s still an issue. It’d be one thing if he’d shown himself to previously have been an accurate passer and now wasn’t. If that was the case I’d be more inclined to put some more blame on the OL, the WRs, etc. but that’s not been the case. And at the end of the day it feels like many of Love’s issues are just “fundamental” ones that aren’t going to radically change based on the personnel around him. I don’t think a healthier OL or more experienced WRs make him make smarter decisions or not throw the ball into double- or triple-coverage or throw a league-leading amount of uncatchable passes. It’s one thing to put a throw where a veteran or elite WR might catch it and a rookie or “average” one might not; it’s another thing to be consistently making passes that NO ONE could hope to catch. And yeah, Rodgers and Favre weren’t MVPs their first years, Peyton threw a bunch of picks, but I also don’t know that any of them were ever the least accurate QBs in the league a third of the way through the season. Some improvement is not out of the question of course but I don’t think there are very many examples of a player who’s less accurate than every other starting QB becoming the type of player you build your franchise around (and if they do exist they are certainly the exception rather than the rule)
