Their manager, Hall of Famer Earl Weaver, who at one time managed the Appleton Foxes ... the precursor to our very own Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The Foxes played in a 1920's era stadium (I don't know when it was built, but you know what I'm talking about if I used the term "on stilts") on Spencer Street in Appleton. Goodland Field was where my baseball lovin' Dad took me to my first "professional" baseball game. It was also the stadium where I got my first autographed baseball - from a rookie named Alex Rodriguez. The ball was stolen off my desk at work. The next season ... new stadium ... new name...

...anyway, the Orioles had 4 20 game winners on their pitching staff one year,
Weaver had a hard time finding work for his pen.

To think that the Orioles of 1969-71 won 318 games yet lost the WS in two of those years.
I noticed that in my track through top Winners (regulation). It was before my time I was still in Cloth diapers.

The Brewers need to finish this postseason strong and take advantage of the extra home crowd and fresh arms of our Pitchers.

The Brewers need to finish this postseason strong for sure. Although imo the Bye and extra game(s) at home really help. Especially for Fans! Get the top of our bullpen rested is also a significant advantage. I’m also fully aware of recent failures, but this team is on another plateau imo. This is as good as any Milwaukee team since Rollie Fingers retired to save his mustache.
It'd be nice but with this group the window is wide open and frankly they should be even better next year.

Yeah October is another season, another world. The biggest obstacle, at least for a few years, is the Dodgers. But the Crew has done well against them in the regular season. This team seems too good to fall in the playoffs, like earlier versions. I hope that's the case. The Crew has shown they can win the Central. Now they have to show they can do much, much more.

Wow I knew those Oriole's teams were good, but four 20-game winners in one year? That's unreal and unlikely to happen agin, up there with DiMaggio's 54-game hitting streak.

I saw them play a doubleheader in 1969. The scores were 9-0 and 13-2. Their pitching was solid. Their defense as well. Brooks Robinson, Davey Johnson, Paul Blair among others.

Thanks m, much appreciated. I knew Earl Weaver was a great manager. I had no idea they or any other team had four, 20-game winners in one season, or that the Oriole's played so well back in those years. You have an incredible memory my friend!

(Did you have any blue crab while in Maryland? I love those things, but it is a challenge to eat them - a very messy challenge. It's worth it.)

103 wins. This is great. I've enjoyed reading about this team. Got to see 3 games... but man... what a season.
Agreed weeds. For once, I'm looking forward to watching the MLB playoffs. Call me a fair-weather fan. Guilty.

Yes, the Brewers have won the Central for four years in a row, and burned and crashed in their first playoff series each year.

But since Miz opened the season, and is now a contender for a Cy Young award, this team just feels different - I don't know how to explain it. A lot of factors at play - Miz became the pitcher we suspected, at least 1 or 2 other starting pitchers did very well, as did middle relief and closing. As for hitting, this is definitely a "small ball" team with a large number of guys who can bat around .275 and make plays when runners are in scoring position.

I'd actually like the first series to be the Dodgers. Break the curse of the playoffs and take down the team everyone just knows will win a third-straight WS. Not this year!

Saw them on the road. After watching the Orioles destroy teams the opposition had to eat crow. I recall that the KC Royals came into the league in 1969. The Orioles beat them the very first 21 times they played them. That has to be discouraging.

Now that is a dominant team with 21 straight wins over a competitor. Wow.

I think that was one of the problems for the AL in the 50s and 60s. They usually had one great team. But they were rarely competitive except for maybe 1959 and 1967. The NL always had a race. There were more good teams. And they won more All Star games then as well. So when it came to the WS the powerhouse did not always win.

The Padres it shall be. Not only did they win the series against the Crew this season, they are also on a 20-3 streak right now. This is the team I didn't want to see them being up against.

Thanks weeds, I didn't realize the Padres have been so hot. Then again, there isn't and shouldn't be an easy path to the WS.

I like the Brewers' chances in a series with the Dodgers or Padres. This feels like a "destiny" team, umm whatever that means. OK, it means they will win the WS. They have had momentum on their side the entire season.

Brewers are 18-6 in September, so I'm looking forward to a great series between them. Facing the Miz-buzzsaw twice will hopefully put fear into them. ,)

The Cubs had really fell hard across 26 games in September going 11-13 before losing 3 straight in Postseason.

During the same month of Sept, Milwaukee went 18-6 and distinguished themselves as the true front runner.

Ironically, the Padres also went 18-6 in last Septembers regular season.

Is the series with the Padres best of 5? I think so.

Padres caught the brewers in a cold spot. IMO this brewers team is different than the one from August and I think it's different from the ones that struggled in Petco park over recent years.

If there's one pitcher I want in baseball to cool off a hot ball club it's the Miz.

Yeah the Padres have been on a tear. Nice that Miz is having his best season. If a stop is needed (or not), he's the guy to do it.

Miz is probably starting Saturday, 10/03. With 6 days off he would be ready for game 5. 4 days rest & he's pitching game 4. Would be great to sweep SD & give everyone some rest. ;)

Yes. It makes sense to start him for many reasons. The first of which is you’d like to fast start off 1-0. Even if you get behind 1-2? etc. You get a Win away and he’d be back fresh in Game 5 at Milwaukee. Hopefully it doesn’t get to that but that’s one scenario.

Like you said best case is we start out 1-0 and win 3-1 or less likely but 3-0 etc. etc. then he’s starting again in the Conference game at home.

There's one for the books, eh? Murph said it would have gone foul had the ball not hit an AmFam roof cable. Anyway, the bullpen did some really good things last night ... the Padres stranded 12 runners and that can be taken both ways, right? Padres didn't take advantage of their opportunities ... or ... Brewer pitching kept the ball on the ground. Probably a combo of both. Go Crew.

Miz was probably a bit nervous. Can't blame him. He couldn't find the sweet spot for his FB, and the Padres kept fouling balls on those pitches. He got into trouble with pitch count early, and was never going to get past four innings. He will be much more settled next time. I'm not worried about him at all.

Middle relief was outstanding. I didn't know the Padres stranded 12. So yeah, that can be taken both ways, especially in a one-run win. The Brewers seemed to leave a lot of guys stranded. I recall one time with bases loaded and they didn't get any home.

I'll take the win in a weird, weird game. The Brewers of the last few years would have lost this game. Not this bunch.
