05/17/2007 15:02 PM - Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver has failed to meet NCAA academic requirements and is ineligible for the 2007 season.

Georgia senior cornerback Paul Oliver has has been declared academically ineligible for the 2007 season and plans to petition the NFL for entry into the supplemental draft this summer.

Oliver started 15 games last season and was fifth on the team with 57 tackles and had three interceptions. His stock rose after shutting down Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson in the season finale last season. Johnson had only two catches for 13 yards in the Bulldogs' 15-12 victory.

With Oliver out, the Bulldogs are expected to start sophmore Bryan Evans and either senior Thomas Flowers or sophomores Asher Allen or Prince Miller at cornerback. A Georgia coach said Thursday that safety Rashad Jones also could move to cornerback to replace Oliver.

The Bulldogs, who won their last three games to finish 9-4 last season, already faced the arduous task of replacing starting ends Quinton Moses and Charles Johnson, safety Tra Battle and linebacker Tony Taylor.

Definitely might be worth a look.

I'm a bit surprised we didn't draft a single CB this year, so perhaps supplemental draft might be a place where Ted takes a risk on a rookie CB.

Im not making excuses for TT or anything, but maybe TT likes our young CBs, and has his eyes on some free agent guys besides frank walker.

I was also surprised we didnt draft one though.

Oliver went to the Chargers right? I think it might have cost them a fourth rounder, possibly 5th...pretty cheap price for a guy fairing well against Johnson last season IMO.

Yeah this was the one guy in the sup draft that I would have been happy with spending a second day draft pick. Remember we will get a pretty decent compensatory pick for A. Green loss this year. Well at least as it stands now.

How do they determine the compensatory picks that are awarded to teams?

Sorry for the delay in answering... I just seen this question today..

Awarding compensatory picks is determined by a secret formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and season honors with his new team; salary being the primary factor.

So with Green being signed to a huge contract and us signing only Frank Walker to a 1 year deal, and if Green has a decent year to pro bowl year, we should be in line for a 4th or 3rd round pick. Throw in Martin as a loss as well, and one can hope that Taylor gets picked up and Allen has a good year.

So if you factor in this possiblilty in next years draft, this might play into Ted's decision to stay out of FA this year in a rather weak class. However since trades don't count into the formula one can see why he was considering the Moss trade or contemplating the LJ trade.
