The Hobbs signing was a complete head scratcher to me. He's never been healthy a single year of his career and played in the slot and not really that well. We sign him to big money and try to move him to the outside. I can only think that this move has Richie B. written all over it. Speaking of which, Nixon came along from the Raiders and Richie B. as well. Do they know the raiders stink and especially on defense? Sure, Jacobs is a beast, but those guys are duds.

The guys that come to mind for me are Fuller, Gilmore and Samuel. I believe both Ballentine and Hollman are available. I'm not sure I would want to explore them any further. They just might have some familiarity. Pretty much, old guys that have been beaten up, or young guys that couldn't hack it. Might still be better options than what we have.
Thanks milani. I think Gluten may take a stab at a veteran QB, even for half a season. IMO, that is how bad this CB group is. Valentine is probably playing the best, but he'll never be a shutdown corner.

I'm afraid Gluten will have to remake this group, as he did with the safeties a few years ago. A big FA signing and the draft will be needed to deliver what the team needs.

I feel this way about most spots, but CB is in that tier where it is even more unlikely to happen: people don't let good CBs hit the market. Part of why we got X is the league doesn't view Safety as a premium position, so teams are more willing to let them go if they get, ahem, "too expensive." It's kind of like tight end in that regard.

CB is more like QB, LT, and edge rusher. These players don't change teams. If they do change teams, there is a question mark around them and you should be cautious.

Interesting and very true. I recall back going in the 1998 season we had plenty of Pro Bowlers on our defensive roster. We even drafted a top DE in Vonnie Holiday. But in free agency we let CB Doug Evans and 15 year S Eugene Robinson walk. Made sense. Our D was still good except when we faced the Vikings. Randall Cunningham escaped our DL and had plenty of time to find Randy Moss, Chris Carter, and Robert Smith. The Vikings were 16-1 and appeared unstoppable. The irony was that it was Robinson and his Falcons that went into Minnesota and beat the Vikings. And Eugene not only goes to his 3rd straight SB but after his 16th year he is named to the Pro Bowl! The Packers elevated young Darren Sharper to the FS spot in 1998. And it was Sharper who played too soft on the " Owens Caught It " TD. Had old man Eugene still been there I am convinced he would have broken up the play and we move on.

Good point. I still remember all those years when the Packers would take CBs 1st and 2nd, to no avail except for JA. And yeah, the good ones get paid to stay. So not as easy to fix as S. Well put.

In 1999 we had the Randy Moss draft: 3 corners. Antuan Edwards, Fred Vinson, and Mike McKenzie. The only one that panned out was Mike McKenzie.

I remember McKenzie and he was a very good CB. I think GB lost him to the Saints in FA. Not sure.

It turned out to be a trade because he was under contract and disgruntled for 2 reasons. The 2003 loss at Philly of which they blamed Donnatell and fired him. And he wanted a new contract. So he claimed he had an injury and that is when they made the trade. Brett Favre told him that he should honor his contract because #4 had been in the same situation before himself.
