The Sehag loss is squarely on MM, imo. Yes, a lot of guys made horrific plays, but it was McCarthy who went into "play not to lose" mode.
we definitely let several opportunities slip away over the years. Seattle in 2014 and that 49ers Divisional during the 2021 Season Divisional. Both were Teams debacles and the most recent one was an ongoing fiasco with repeated poor blocking all season long that did not get rectified.

And special teams blunders cost us BOTH of those games tragically. But I also put it on MM for losing home playoff games to the Giants and Coughlin in 2007 and 2011. Then he goes in and beats Dallas in front of around 100,000 people but gets blown out by Atlanta.

You just have to KNOW that Florio will latch onto anything that casts Rodgers in a negative light - Florio never forgave Rodgers for his snide comment about Florio's site and it kills me. Sometimes, Florio can be not much more than a purse-swinging, hair-pulling little b*tch - it's high entertainment I tell ya.

Good memory. The loss to the Hags had a fake FG that turned into a TD just before the 1H ended, and the Niners loss was a blocked punt that turned into a TD.

I remember the Atlanta game. Out of the four NFCCG losses since the SB, the loss to Atlanta didn't surprise me. I certainly wasn't happy, but it was not an upset. There was another loss in the NFCCG that was expected, but I don't recall the opponent.

The two losses that hurt were the 2014 loss in Seattle, and I think a loss under MLF to the Niners at Lambeau. I'm not as certain that the loss to the Niners was in an NFCCG. I do remember it was a playoff game, at Lambeau, and the Niners scored 6 points on offense. And the Niners scored a TD off a blocked punt.

And then there was the loss to Brady and the Bucs, but I forget the year. Brady threw like a 50 yd TD pass just before the first half ended. I think that was at Lambeau as well. They all kind of run together as one, big, collective loss.

Thanks weeds. I'm no Florio fan either, although describing AR as "isolated and dismissive" is accurate, at least in the last 5 years or so.

Amen weeds...This is a great description of Florio. I've been chuckling ever since I read it.

In 2007 we were the number 2 seed and the Giants upset the Cowboys in Dallas which gave us the home NFCCG. We were outplayed and the Giants did everything to lose the game but they won in OT on a long FG in -3 weather. The Seattle loss in 2014 also had the onside kick blunder by us. Plus a HAIL MARY 2 point conversation. Talk about finding ways to lose. And we had another loss to SF at Lambeau. It was the year Rodgers came back after a long injury to beat the Bears in the season finale. But that game was a first round loss in bitter cold. Matthews could not play because of injury. Micah Hyde dropped an INT late that could have resulted in a game clinching drive.

Thanks milani, your memory is better than mine. I remember the Giants upsetting some team to give GB the NFCCG but forgot it was Dallas. I do remember that loss though on a truly frigid night at Lambeau, and a Favre INT in OT and an impossible long FG by the Giants for such a cold night - around 50 yards but much harder in that cold.

I think the Giants then went on to beat the previously undefeated Pats, who came into the SB 18-0. I think Randy Moss was on that team - and Bellichik refused to shake Coughlin's hand after the upset. Well, I think this is what happened. That Giants team was just destined to win the SB, which I think included the "helmet catch" bu some WR.

Pls correct any of this.

Sounds correct to me. If you would allow me to just piggyback on that season and add something that always stood out about that season. The Giants lost to both GB and Dallas to open that season and lost soundly. The Giants lost 6 games and 4 of them were to Packers , Dallas 2X and Patriots Week17.
You know it’s destiny when you take down ALL THREE teams you lost to across 4 games regular season, then go on to knock off only the second undefeated SB Contender ever.
The Giants got hot at the right time.

It’s also some comfort to know that you can get your butd whooped a couple times earlier in Regular season and it does not define who you really are. Really you can lose multiple times to a Division Rival and still erase their memory altogether if you learn from it. It’s how you respond to adversity and eventually how you finish that really matters.

That's crazy. There's something about the Giants, they have a tendency to come out of nowhere.

Yes, it was David Tyree who made the catch. The Pack actually went into the Meadowlands early that season and creamed Manning and the Giants. The Giants kicker had quite a bruise on his right foot from kicking all those rocks and finally making one. We should have been going to Dallas for the NFCCG. We lost that year on Thanksgiving Night down there as Favre went out in the first half giving Rodgers a chance to play. Tony Romo threw an INT in the end zone in the last moments to seal the Giant upset. Coughlin was a great game planner. In 2010 the Giants helped us get into the playoffs when they lost to the Eagles late in the season by giving up a game ending punt return TD.

But they deserved it. Coughlin was a gamer. Took the expansion Jaguars to the postseason in 1996. They went into Denver and upset Elway and Terrell Davis with our ex QB, Mark Brunell. If not for that the Pack probably face Denver instead of New England in SB 31.

Interesting. I don't think it would have made a difference though. That Packer team was stronger than the team that lost to Denver the following year.

David Tyree of helmet-catch fame! Thanks milani. That was a weird season. The Giants started out horribly and the Pats with Randy Moss onboard couldn't be beaten - well, until they did of course.

The Giants won that SB (I think it was Feb 2008) much like the Packers won in 2011 - coming from the back of the seeding to win it all.

Coughlin was a very good coach. I remember his facing turning dark red/purple the night of that game in GB. But hey, Coughlin and Eli won two SB titles.

I remember thinking there was no way that FG by the Giants would come close to being good. I think it was a 50 yarder but the temp was like -3 and the wind chill making it much worse. But for a "team of destiny" these are the things that happen. And that kick sailed right through the goalposts like it was 65 degrees and sunny.

(I remember Bellicihik running off the field after the SB loss and not shaking hands with Coughlin. Does anyone know if that's correct? Thanks all.)

It certainly was. Late in the 1996 season the Packers drubbed Denver 41-6 although Elway did not play that day. The Packers had both Levens and Edgar Bennett in the backfield along with Keith Jackson and Chmura at TE. They had the no. 1 D in the league.

That last Giant FG was 47 yards I believe. They had missed two shorter ones. The Pack failed to recover a Giant muff on a punt near midfield close to the end of regulation. That was a bad omen. Coughlin game planned to stop our running game and Favre spent too much time throwing toward the sidelines instead of down the middle of the field.

Don't forget Desmond Howard, Andre Rison, and Sean Jones, who all left the team after Super Bowl XXXI.

That distance sounds about right. I never thought that kick would be good in that cold. I forgot the Giants had missed shorter FGs earlier in the game. I can't imagine kicking the ball in that weather, much less nail a 47 yarder in OT. That was just another heartbreaking loss capped with a Favre INT.

Favre did the same thing with the Vikings in an NFCCG against the Saints. The Vikings were within FG range to win. All Favre had to do was get back to the LOS. He threw it instead (of course he did), it was picked and the Saints won that game and eventually the SB against the Colts, I think......

I also think the Viking kicker was Ryan Longwell.

I think you're right. How many seasons did he play in GB? Seems like he was a Packer for a good number of years.
He was signed in 1997 when Brett Conway, the kicker we drafted struck out and got hurt. He played through 2005 and then the Vikings signed him.

Thanks milani. So yeah he was in GB for 7 or 8 seasons. He was a great kicker. I don't know why he went to MN. I'm guessing it was money. Kickers are not paid anywhere near what their teammates make, so a difference of a few hundred thousand dollars can make a difference to a K.
