First, you can't practice while on IR so you're probably looking at 9 weeks minimum. And if you're looking at 9 weeks minimum, since the Packers are an unduly optimistic bunch when it comes to injuries, why not hold out for a miraculous 7 or 8 week return. They are doing that right now as McCarthy stated a decision will not be made until after the surgery which is not yet scheduled, which could take you to 10 weeks. If they IR him at that point with a 10 week return, he ain't coming back. In short, like us, they know that 9 or 10 weeks will kill any playoff hopes at which point no chance will be taken on reinjury. Something tells me surgery on the throwing shoulder makes the whole matter moot anyway despite McCarthy's guarded optimism. This is crushingly unfortunate with implications that may reach beyond this season. It's possible he'll never throw quite the same way again. When a guy can flick a 40 yard rope off his back foot, there are finely tuned mechanics at work that no doctor can explain. The slightest alteration in shoulder flexibility or motion when all is said and done could force a change in mechanics. I don't mean to be alarmist, but I'm reminded of Carson Palmer suffering an elbow tear that did not require surgery, missing 11 weeks, and then never quite regaining his velocity. And some believe that injury occurred as a result of altered mechanics following an ACL. Still a good QB, but not what he was before. Or consider Tramon Williams. He broke a collarbone, suffered nerve damage and wasn't quite the same after that. Still decent, but not the same. We'll see what happens over the coming weeks, months, year.
