Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Ricky Ray hyper-extended his right knee Friday in a pre-season game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Ray rolled out to toss a pass to fullback Mathieu Bertrand during the second quarter and was hit by Blue Bombers defensive end Marcus Jones. Ray fell awkwardly to the turf.

The Edmonton quarterback remained on the ground for several minutes, clutching his right knee. He eventually limped off the field to receive medical attention at the Eskimos bench before heading to the dressing room.

Ray didn't return to the game, which finished in a 20-20 deadlock.

"It was a lot of pain when it happened," said Ray. "It scared me there for a little bit."

Danny Maciocia, Edmonton's rookie head coach, said Ray will likely sit out the Eskimos' final pre-season contest Thursday in Winnipeg. However, he expects his No. 1 quarterback to be ready for the start of the regular season.

"Everybody is just one hit away," said Maciocia. "But we know that Ricky will be fine."

Ray's return to Edmonton was a much-anticipated event for Eskimos fans. He re-signed with the club last month shortly after being released by the NFL's New York Jets.

He tested the football waters in the United States last year after guiding the Eskimos to a Grey Cup championship in 2003.

Ray had completed five straight passes before he was knocked out of Friday's contest.

Bombers, Eskimos play to a draw

No. 3 Blue Bombers quarterback Russ Michna found Dimitrius Breedlove for a 35-yard major midway through the fourth before kicker Troy Westwood booted a 24-yard field goal with 38 seconds remaining to give Winnipeg a 20-17 edge.

But Edmonton kicker Sean Fleming booted a 30-yard field goal
