I know all of the post-game talk will be about the big plays that we made mistakes or opportunities missed, but I feel someone who will fly under the radar of the Seahawks game was Richard Rodgers. It seemed that when we needed a catch, Richard Rodgers was there grabbing the ball and holding onto it.

There was some talk a week or two ago where McCarthy came out and said that the Rodgers of Week 1 was completely different to the Rodgers of this post-season, and I think he definitely showed his hands today. He started that game and didn't make a single catch, I believe Quarless came in quite early, I'm not too sure, but the progress he has made is definitely a positive looking into next season.

Good post. RR is a good reason to feel good about next season. I feel that the Packers have a solid tight end now that is capable of making clutch catches on 3rd downs. Hopefully he will improve instead of regress in his sophomore season.

So how do you rate him for this match?

Ironic, this thread was after the last Seahawks game!

I'll keep syaing it, he is exactly what we need at TE. I look for his run blocking to improve, but he can run to where he needs to be, turn around and catch it and we can depend on it. If he's open, if he's being hit, if he's being interfered with, he's most likely going to catch it. If he does that 5 times a game for 1st downs and a TD every 2 games or so and he has made our offense much better than it already is.

He's a nice tight end - not a game-breaker, but a reliable pass-catcher and a good checkdown option. It seems his blocking has improved from last year, and that's vital if he wants to be part of this offense. I hope he continues to develop, he can be the type of redzone threat that Bubba Franks once was.

Quarles seems to have disappeared from this offense.

Rodgers is for sure not one of the fastest tight ends in the league but he has great hands. I would like him to be more aggressive during most games which he did a great job against the Seahawks though. Hopefully he´ll be able to keep that going. Overall he´s a slightly above average TE who could be a major asset for the quarterback in the red zone down the road.

While it seems Quarless isn´t part of the passing game anymore he nearly gets as many snaps as Rodgers blocking for the run.

Hope the other team doesn't figure out that Rodgers means "pass", Quarless means "run". :)

Our current tight ends must also be part fullback, and will often line up in the backfield. This is something we couldn't do with Jermichael Finley, but the trade-off was that he was dynamic and could stretch the field. I'd like to find another one of those guys to complement Richard Rodgers, but they're few and far in-between.

Rodgers blocks for the run as well.

It would be perfect for the Packers if one of their tight ends could actually be part fullback but neither Rodgers nor Quarless are great blockers.

I saw improvement in Rodgers blocking in this last game compared to the early preseason. Instead of lollygagging into the second level or down line and hitting nobody, or blowing a cut block, I saw a couple of plays against Seattle where he got off the mark and hit some guys.

As for Quarless, you will likely be seeing none of him at some point during the season with Backman getting snaps. Unless Quarless got another continuance, his court date was scheduled for yesterday as reported on 8/28:

http://gnb.247sports.com/Bolt/Quarless-unlikely-to-face-suspension-before-start-of-season-39001026

In the absence of video evidence showing a player dragging a woman out of an elevator, the NFL relies on court records to ascertain what actually happened prior to determining the term of a suspension. If the press reports on this incident are accurate, I'd guess it will be 3 - 4 games.

From the little I've seen, Backman looks pretty natural catching the football. I can't say I took note of his blocking ability in preseason.

Backman stood out to me too at the end of preseason. Up to that point he hadn't done much, reportedly had suspect hands early in camp, probably due to concentration. It seems it plagues a lot of young guys coming in with so much being thrown at them mentally, it makes some sense. But when it was time to perform or get cut, he made just a couple catches on a couple opportunities and made them count I thought. I remember the one he was freaking hammered, made a clean catch and got back up to do it again. I liked that.

And in the salary cap age with a QB like Rodgers that is all he really has to be. It would be great to have a Gronk but you can't afford all pros at every position. I'll take a steady and reliable TE who can be an asset in all parts of the offense and contribute more than just as a pass catcher.

Ho-hum. Yawn. Just another young Packer progressing through the developmental stage of his career like so many before him and many that will follow. It's why we win division championships and/or in the playoffs every year. Young guns overplaying their salary.

I think it is fair to characterize Rodgers as being at the slow end of the spectrum among TEs who are not 2nd. TE/blocking specialists. Good hands and routes to can go a long way, just don't expect him to outrun LBs or bust the seam.

Now if they could just do it THROUGH the playoffs...

Tbh, I don't see Richard as something special. Good hands and blocking is something that every TE should have as a minimum.

A lot of tight ends don´t have good hands like Rodgers though.

I agree at this point. I see nothing "special" about him. He looks solid though and dependable, which is all we need.

Hey, we're all different. If you weren't frustrated with a 15-1 and one-and-done year and then the last NFCC game, more power to you. The Pack can't win it all "every" year, but their fans had very reasonable expectatins maybe three of the last five. "Many" of the other teams certainly do have bad coaches and players, but probably not "31", at least not those that have been winning Super Bowls.
