Why is it considered a GOOD thing to lead the league in penalty minutes? Maybe Ahmad Carroll should join the NHL.

Are there penalty minutes in the NFL?? thought it was just yards?

They should bring in a "sin bin" in the NFL like in Rugby! 10 mins alone to think about what you did!

    Then explain this to me:

Kings Re-Sign NHL Leader in Penalty Minutes
(I know this is an old article but thats not the point)
    You would never see:

"Packers re-sign NFL leader in pass interference penalties." or "facemasks."

Avery is a very solid player. He's on the Rangers now and does a great job. He's cut down on his PM but is a very aggressive player. He's been hurt and when he's not in the lineup the Rangers are 10 games under .500.

He's got a big mouth sometimes and he's the guy everybody hates.......unless he's on your team..........He has hockey skills and is not considered a "goon".......When he gets a penalty he usually takes an opponent off the ice too........It's different in football...........Off-setting penalties are a bad thing in that someone loses an advantage.........in hockey it's considered smart play.

Might be a couple of reasons. I am not familier with Avery but am a referee in hocky.

He might have an obscene amount of talent that the team feels outweighs the negative. or more likely, he is considered the teams "enforcer". That is a guy that the coach will send out to start a fight when the opposing team has gone after one of your team leaders (a Jeremy Roenick for example). So he might have piled on a bunch of 10 min misconducts for fighting. Very seldom does someone lead the league in penalty minutes without being an enforcer.

If most of his penalty minutes are from hooking, holding, etc. then he is getting beat too much and the team probably wouldn't keep him.

Is the team penalized at all when a player commits a 10 min misconduct penalty? If not, then I can understand the logic in that.

No the team isnt but the player is gone for 10 mins. or until the next stoppage in play after the 10 mins. expire.

the 10 min. usually comes along with a 5 min major for fighting. But, in most cases, both players get the 5 + 10. However, in the oppinion of the official, he can also penalize one of the players an extra two minute minor for initiating the fight. In amateur hockey, you get 5 + a game misconduct for fighting.

Penalties cause the team to plays shorthanded for majors and minors unless the penalties are coincidental. Misconducts only affect the player involved.

True. Maybe Ryan can change the board settings/filter, so that when someone types his name, it says :

"He who must not be named."

Avery has his good points and his bad points. He is a Super-pest that disrupts the other team. He also draws a lot of penalties, which has been mentioned above which is a plus. The thing with these types of players is that you often have to rely on the opposing team losing their cool. In the playoffs that does not happen as often and the last thing you want is somebody taking stupid penalties at the worse time of year. For all his penalty minutes he actually has pretty good hands (hockey lingo that he can put the puck in the net). Put in the right situation I think he is a potential Claude Lemieux type where you hate him, but he can win you some games as he does play with a lot of passion.
