Guys...I've been away so I didn't catch the scrimmage but read alot about it. Thanks to all who have contributed to this site. I have learned alot about the scrimmage through this site. Who would have guessed that chase and 666 want Sherman fired after one scrimmage? Shocking!

On a positive note, it seems like keeping Sander on the roster all last season has paid off. It's early but based on the NFL Europe results and camp so far, it looks like he is going to be a keeper. If he is, alot of you guys owe Sherman an apology.

Having two punters didn't hurt us as much as many think. you only bring 45 players, not 53so as long as u rotate them correctly or when needed ur ok.

with that said, i would have rather had a WR take his place, but thats just hindsight speaking after we had no WR for the vikings game

Sander isn't over the hump yet, but he's at least on top of the hump. Though it was a questionable use of a high draft pick by Sherman, I thought that for that price, it was best to keep him on the roster for a year. Even some of the best punters take two or three years to develop.

I don't buy that for a second. Instead of keeping that extra PUNTER on the roster we could have been auditioning PR/KR candidates, or like oyu said another WR. Keeping the punter all year was the last straw for Sherman in Harlan's eyes. Sander would have fared perfectly fine on the PS. No one in their right mind would have claimed the kid. That was an embarrasment to the organization.

Keeping three kickers is not unheard of in the NFL. Several teams last year had a punter, place kicker and a kick off man, which meant three kickers on the 45 man active roster and yet these teams were not criticized in any way. I think Sander was picked too high, but we needed a punter and he looked like the right guy for the job. Sander though is a perfect example of why the worst time to go looking for a guy is when you desperately need one at that position.

having 2 place kickers is a little more acceptable than 2 punters, though....Longwell's distance issues would be an example of an appropriate situation.

With that said, I'm really on the fence w/ the whole Sander issue, of course I agree that he was picked too high, but he's showing some good signs. His 1st on on Friday was a great punt!

But it's three kickers on the active roster and in our situation it's two kickers on the active roster and one on the inactive roster. Each is equally as bad IMO.

kemosabe....

Don't bother..you won't find it anywhere that I said he should be fired after one "scrimmage"....

Depack, net, Packmaster, Ob1, etc...all have a personal axe to grind if anybody says ANYTHING..realistic about Mike Sherman....i don't know..it's like you're insulting their girlfriend..or wife..or something like that.....

I've been on other Packer sites...where fans can talk realistically about certain subjects...but here it's anathema to say anything about Mike Sherman....

i think it's a character flaw...like a certain washington dc resident who can never admit that he has EVER made a mistake about anything...(a sure sign of weakness..or megalomania)....or else he will take his football and go home....

but there it is....

The only one with a personal axe to grind is you and you appear to have it against Mike Sherman. This obsession is unhealthy. Seek help.

BTW, I didn't know you lived in DC.

You are free to have your opinion but its fact only 45 are active. As per the 'last straw' Harlan stated numerous times if he had to select one instance it was the mckenzie deal he felt the coach should have been worrying about the game, not a contract which ultimately lead to the demotion of sherman, not to mention Harlan always has like having GM AND Coach versus them being done by one person.

When I am off work I will research my statements and provide the facts with links if you request them.

As for audtioning for PR/KR or WR we were doing that, but no one was worth the time and by the time we NEEDED a WR it was playoff time.

I can't wait. :D

While you are researching, try to find another NFL roster n the past 50 years that keeps 2 PUNTERS. It was ridiculous. I see a point in keeping a KO specialist but Sander couldn't kickoff. It didn't make any sense at all.

Let's not make an issue out of of the 53/45 roster thing because I've hashed that over and over before. Let's just not go there. We wouldn't be able to come to an agreement. :)

I haven't been on this forum long. and the more I post you'll soon see that I love Mike Sherman. I think he's a great person, a great coach, and probably a great GM. He was just in over his head with all of the responsibility. I'll defend Sherman for most of the GM decisions, but the punter in the 3rd round was ridiculous. To keep him on the roster to save face was the final straw though.

ORRELSE: Imagine this scenario. You draft a punter with a high pick. He has a bad training camp so you waive him. He's picked up by another team (which he most likely would have been--how often does a GM get a chance to pick up a third round pick for nothing?) and put onto their practice squad. A year or two later he's starting, and he turns out to be one of the best punters in the league. That means you got burned twice--once with the wasted draft pick and again because the guy is punting for ANOTHER TEAM.

Rightly or wrongly, if Sherman didn't believe Sander had that kind of potential, he wouldn't have drafted him in the third round to begin with. So by keeping Sander, Sherman stuck to his convictions. Had he given up on Sander and Sander went on to become a good punter for another team, Sherman would be ripped mercilessly for being wishy-washy by the very same people who now rip him for sticking to his convictions.

And by the way, there was at least one team that kept two punters on its roster a few years ago. I'm pretty sure it was San Diego. I don't know if any other teams have done it. By the same token, I could ask you how many teams have waived players who were selected in the third round. I'm guessing that's a pretty rare occurence, barring injury or off-field troubles.

Picking a punter in the thrid round is not a bad thing if it works out and it will with B.J. becuase he is going to be very good. Sherman had no idea that a kid with his talent was going to get the jibies and it happens... you do not give up on raw talent 5 months after the draft. Jeese the Falcons gave up on Brett and traded him to Green Bay.

The Raiders have the best kicking combination in the NFL. Janakowski who was twenty five of twenty Eight last year and Shane Lechler (A league leading 46.7 yard gross average.

They were both drafted in the same draft year six years ago. Janakowski was the raiders first pick OVERALL.. Lechler was their thrid round pick that same year.

That is six solid years from the two of them... and they can play another five if not more. Punters and kickers have a long life span in the NFL.

To give up on BJ last year would have been a huge mistake.

Try again. Scifres was kept as a kickoff specialist.

Nothing to agree on, its a fact. Check the rules yourself bro.

When did I ever disagree that there wasn't a 45 man roster? Get off your high horse and read my post. I never once said there wasn't a 45 man roster.

SlickVision said:
I don't think it was done to 'save face' I mean hell he took a PUNTER in the 3rd round then if that wasnt enough he put him on a roster in which had a punter. Just what face did he save?

Thank you. You just repeated exactly what I was trying to say. By keeping Sander all year, That was Sherman's way of conning the public into thinking the team would be better. Sherman should have admitted his mistake by even drafting the kid so high--but then compounded that goof with another one by keeping the kid who couldn't punt on the roster all year. Sander did absolutely nothing on the bench while we had to use Chatman as a 3rd WR for 4 games while Fergie got hurt. Sander being on the 53 man roster prevented us from auditioning extra players.

Anyhow here is the info I stated I would search for.

Harlan said he basically came to his decision to relieve Sherman of the general manager's duties when he saw him agonizing over the situation involving cornerback Mike McKenzie. A holdout all of training camp, McKenzie reported the second week of the season with the intention only of getting traded.

And I'm sure it didn't have anything to do with getting schooled numerous other times during his GM tenure either, right. It was solely based on the MM debacle, right? WRONG. Sherman has a hideous track record during his tenure. Where do I start?
1. Lowballed KGB and Hunt with 3rd round tenders and then got schooled by Andy Reid when they jacked up the asking price that we had to match. If Sherman would have used first round tenders on those guys we wouldn't be paying Hunt or KGB the money we are right now. Those deals were cap-killers, and the sole reason why we were handcuffed from signing anyone of note for the past 5 off-seasons.
2. Joe Johnson. Need I say more? Yeah, I think I will say more. He was a real great free agent signing, huh? He played like maybe 20 snaps his whole career for GB, huh?
3. Sherman was a master at wasting draft picks. In 2003 we traded up to get Petersen and Lee, YES traded away 2 extra picks so we could move up and get 2 guys who can't even get on the field in 3 years. Do you want me to keep going?

Why don't you be more vague. :-? Let's see if we can get this straightened out instead of mocking fun of each other.
